Brace Yourselves, Lady Gaga Goes ARTPOP

by Hrag Vartanian on August 6, 2012

Lady Gaga awoke yesterday and calculated decided to share the name of her new album with the world (lucky us) … though her new tattoo last week (pictured above) should’ve tipped us all off …

Yup, it sounds like the pop star who can’t get enough of the art world is going deeper into the art world rabbit hole.

Understandably the fan reactions (which began when she tweeted her new tat) were varied:

And then this from Gaga:

I don’t know about you, but I almost vomited in my mouth.

On her social media site, LittleMonsters.com, she also hinted that ARTPOP might be an acronym for ”Artistic Revolution Through the Potential of Pop.” That sounds Noble enough, but then this disturbing tidbit from a “chat” with fans on LittleMonsters.com:

Wait, what!? I think she means Pop Art was an art movement in the 1960s … oy. Once before we’ve pointed out that Lady Gaga needs a serious art education since her current tutors (Terence Koh, for one) and her alma mater (NYU) obviously didn’t do their job.

Alas, this isn’t going to be the last time we hear about art from Gaga. Now, let’s walk back to a more innocent era known as 2011 and watch this little video clip of her talking about Artpop — I’m just not going to ALL CAP the album title anymore — and how she considers herself a painter.

O, boy.

ADDENDUM:

And, as our commenter pointed out, the Pet Shop Boys produced their album PopArt in 2003 … hmmmm

    Cultural syphilis.

FWIW, now she’s Shepard Faireying off the Pet Shop Boys, who already released PopArt in 2003.

Although, Transivision Vamp gets first rights to PopArt: http://j.mp/O1D3X1

Hrag, instead of excoriating Gaga because of her attempts to become an ARTPOP star (instead of what she REALLY is, a POP star), let’s get her to open up an ARTPOP museum and have her fund some of the starving artists (visual and performance) she left in the dust during her rise to POP stardom. Here’s Gaga’s chance to give back to the community she left in the dust back when she was making $100 a pop for hosting parties and playing the downtown circuit. Someone should convince the diva that this would be the best way for her to lend some credibility to her “performance art.”

Gerry, it’s not her attempts to go “artpop” it’s more her attempts to not really learn much and evolve. I hope she embraces and transforms it but it sounds hollow but I’d love to be proven wrong.

Gerry, while I do admire all the attention that Gaga has drawn to anti bullying, I totally agree with you on the point that it would be nice if Gaga gave back to the gritty scrappy low budget NYC art scene that encouraged her before she hit it big. A friend of mine tells stories about this young quickly nyu girl named Stefani who was trying to get people to the bitter end for her next show. It would be nice if she could water her roots.

Hrag, I totally agree that Gaga’s gaffes make her interests in the arts look superficial… does she have a fact checker?

Actually Hrag, pop art started in the 1950s…and peaked in the 1970s. Now who’s lacking education?

LOL, Gaga fans are the dumbest trolls.

        Throwing insults. Very cool!

I was just in a funny mood and trying to engage with you a little. No harm meant.

Lol, I think Gaga is trying to bring to life what Andy Wahol was all about. He was the first to suggest the concept, and she’s trying to bring it to life. Lets see if she succeeds before we judge her. The album hasn’t even been released yet!
