Saturday, August 6, marked the opening of James Franco’s latest venture into the art world. High/Low Rob Lowe opened at Terence Koh’s Asia Song Society on Canal Street, but closed indefinitely the day after opening. We know many of you have been suffering from Franco fatigue. Thoughts are definitely mixed about the actor’s rise in the commercial gallery world. Is he the real deal or just an over privileged famous guy? Honestly, he seems genuine, but that doesn’t mean he deserves the coverage he has gotten. Whatever you think, this whole Franco art thing doesn’t seem to be going away.

If you happen to stay at one of Andre Balazs’s Standard Hotels, you may notice that the televisions aren’t exactly playing standard programming. This year’s StandART Video Series, launching at the Top of The Standard Hotel, New York yesterday evening, features video art that will play across the country in the rooms of Balazs’s lush chain. The in-room video art exhibition, curated by Creative Time, includes work by Andrew Cross, Allison Schulnik, Naomi Fisher, Terence Koh, Estefanía Peñafiel Loaiza, Kalup Linzy and Slater Bradley.

Obrist is strange. There, I said it. In an event that often felt like a coffee klatch at Obrist’s house, the art world power broker known as Hans Ulrich Obrist — he’s #2 on Art Review’s Power 100 — had a book reading last Saturday at MoMA’s PS1 in Long Island City for his newest publication, Hans Ulrich Obrist: Interviews, Volume 2. The event venue looked like a cross between a set for the Last Supper and a conference stage thrown together by Leni Riefenstahl and there was coffee and books being served on the periphery of the event.

The issue of self-branding, self-publication and self-advertising come to the forefront when artist websites as a medium of presentation are critically analyzed.
