LOS ANGELES — I don’t know about you, but sometimes :) and :( just don’t cut it. Happy and sad? That’s it? There are so many more human emotions, with nuances between anger and frustration, surprise and elation. Perhaps this is what’s behind the hype around emoji for iPhone: finally, a better way to visually express emotions online.

Thank goodness for [Emojicons](http://emojicons.com/home?ref=hyperallergic.com). Crowdsourced and culled together by editors, the site is like a best of the best of expressive uses of text.

Now, emoticon libraries have existed for years, but Emojicons features a more enhanced design, with clear categories, a “Hall of Fame”, and a simple way to cut and paste your favorite looks (especially useful as I have no clue how to type most of those characters). Plus they have a fun Twitter account and are even planning to create a bookmarklet. It’s like a living archive of great emoticons, a monument to the creativity of a generation.
