In the aftermath of a tragic Thanksgiving accident, a fundraiser is being held for the family of artist and longtime School of Visual Arts faculty member Ron Baron. The initiative, which is being circulated widely in the New York art community, aims to raise $75,000 for the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) retrofitting of Baron and his wife Irit Baniel’s Williamsburg home, as well as to help them acquire a handicap-accessible vehicle. These needs have arisen due to the permanent spinal column damage suffered by their daughter Ruby-Joy, 14, in the accident, which also claimed the life of their 5-year-old daughter Naomi.
The campaign has already raised almost $12,000, and can be accessed on the online fundraising platform You Caring. Ruby-Joy has also just launched a blog, Still Rad in Rehab, to chronicle and reflect on her experiences; the inaugural post evinces an impressive degree of thoughtfulness and wit — and, yes, even contains a great selfie.
As arts communities around the world experience a time of challenge and change, accessible, independent reporting on these developments is more important than ever.
