# 1,400 US Museums to Offer Free Admission on September 22

On September 22, 2018, almost 1,400 art and cultural institutions will offer free admission to the general public for [Museum Day.](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/museumday/museum-day-2018/?ref=hyperallergic.com) Interested patrons can [peruse the participating institutions](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/museumday/search/?q=&ref=hyperallergic.com) and acquire two advance tickets per person. Museum Day will celebrate its 14th annual edition with the theme “Women Making History.”

The democratizing event, sponsored by Smithsonian magazine, encourages museums nationwide to open their doors free of charge. All Washington DC-based Smithsonian institutions offer costless admission daily.

“Now, more than ever, we recognize the importance of Museum Day in making our country’s knowledge and culture accessible to everyone,” said Amy Wilkins, Chief Revenue Officer at Smithsonian Media.

378 of the participating institutions are art museums, including the [Museum of Arts and Design](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/museumday/venues/museum/museum-of-arts-and-design/?ref=hyperallergic.com) in New York City, and the [Museum of Fine Arts, Boston](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/museumday/venues/museum/museum-of-fine-arts-boston/?ref=hyperallergic.com).
