We have a winner! The “People’s Choice” award for this year’s Storefront for Art and Architecture‘s Critical Halloween Costume Competition goes to the people at Robert A.M. Stern Architects for “Pure Shit.”
The theme for this year’s event, which welcomed more than 500 guests to 80 Greenwich Street in Lower Manhattan, was “I-Relevance.”

Hyperallergic Metro Editor Benjamin Sutton arrived in style as Cory Arcangel’s “Super Mario Clouds.” He may not have snagged a prize but we think he deserves honorable mention.
With thousands of votes cast by Hyperallergic readers and partygoers, “Pure Shit” was the clear winner. Based on architect Frank Gehry’s now infamous retort aimed at a journalist who asked him about his response to people who accuse him of creating showy architecture, the eight-person costume is a perfect encapsulation of the shock, horror, and awesomeness of it all.
Runner-up spots in our online poll went to “,” “,” “Acne Amy Garbage Pail Kid (by Mark Salinas),” and “The [Dead] Print Media (by Karen Miller).”
The night of the party, jurors Sebastian Errazuriz (artist), Alanna Heiss (director of Clocktower Productions), Campbell Hyers (CEO of Control GroupBill Menking/Editor-in-Chief of The Architect’s Newspaper), Roddy Schrock (Eyebeam director of Residencies and Programs), and Eva Franch (Storefront for Art and Architecture Executive Director and Chief Curator) awarded:
- “A Limited Edition Jeff Koons Champagne Bottle” for Best Group Costume — won by SO–IL’s “Moneyshot,”
- a “Paul McCarthy Buttplug” for Best Individual Costume — won by Matt Choot’s “Landscape Urbanism,” and
- a “Fuck You Frank Gehry t-shirt” for Best Critical Costume — won by Robert A.M. Stern Architects’s “Pure Shit.”
