# 17th-Century Log Cabin, Reputedly the Oldest in US, Is for Sale

A 17th-century home in New Jersey needs a new caretaker, and one who has $2.9 million to spend. Built between[ 1638 and 1643](http://www.nytimes.com/2000/04/23/nyregion/on-the-map-this-old-house-is-really-old.html?ref=hyperallergic.com), the [Nothnagle Cabin ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C.%5FA.%5FNothnagle%5FLog%5FHouse?ref=hyperallergic.com)in Gibbstown, New Jersey, is often cited as the oldest surviving log cabin in the United States (it has a close contender in Pennsylvania’s [Lower Swedish Cabin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lower%5FSwedish%5FCabin?ref=hyperallergic.com), dated to 1640-50). After decades of private ownership by one family, this National Register of Historic Places listed site is now [on the market](https://www.weichert.com/70881442/?ref=hyperallergic.com).

Caitlyn Stulpin reported on June 27 [for NJ.com ](http://www.nj.com/gloucester-county/index.ssf/2017/06/njs%5Foldest%5Flog%5Fcabin%5Fselling.html?ref=hyperallergic.com)that owners Harry and Doris Rink, who acquired the house in 1968, have decided to turn over its labor-intensive care since they are both getting older (Harry is 88). However, this is no ordinary home purchase, as Doris told NJ.com that she and her husband “want to live here until we die because this is our home and we love it.” She added in an interview with [Curbed ](https://philly.curbed.com/2017/7/28/16051154/oldest-log-cabin-for-sale-nothnagle?ref=hyperallergic.com)that this was also to assure the new owner can take care of it, and will share its history with the public. The listing [affirms](https://www.weichert.com/70881442/?ref=hyperallergic.com) that the “historic integrity of the home must be preserved, and the owners want it to remain open to guided tours and visitors. A life estate is required where the Rinks will continue their tours and continue to care for their beloved residence.”

Among the challenges of maintaining the cabin, erected with interlocking square-hewn logs that don’t require nails, is making repairs by hand[ using local clay. ](http://www.nj.com/gloucester-county/index.ssf/2014/10/six%5Fthings%5Fyou%5Fmight%5Fnot%5Fknow%5Fabout%5Fthe%5Foldest%5Flog%5Fcabin%5Fin%5Fthe%5Funited%5Fstates%5Fnew%5Fjerseys%5Fnothnagle.html?ref=hyperallergic.com)Weichert Realtors-East Brunswick[ has numerous photographs](https://www.weichert.com/70881442/?ref=hyperallergic.com) from the exterior and interior of the cabin, which has later additions (one is where the Rinks reside), but its oldest section is kept as a museum to its past. The Rinks have regularly [given free tours](http://www.nj.com/gloucester-county/index.ssf/2014/10/six%5Fthings%5Fyou%5Fmight%5Fnot%5Fknow%5Fabout%5Fthe%5Foldest%5Flog%5Fcabin%5Fin%5Fthe%5Funited%5Fstates%5Fnew%5Fjerseys%5Fnothnagle.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) to those who make an appointment or are just passing by, and display artifacts discovered on the grounds, such as an almost [three centuries-old shoe](http://www.philly.com/philly/news/new%5Fjersey/nothnagle-cabin-sale-gibbstown-new-jersey-20170627.html?ref=hyperallergic.com). The “Nothnagle” name comes from a family that had acquired it[ in the 19th century](https://njmonthly.com/articles/jersey-living/logged-in-south-jersey-377-log-cabin/?ref=hyperallergic.com), although the construction is sometimes attributed to a man named [Benjamin Braman](http://www.gloucestercountynj.gov/about/historical/nothnagle.asp?ref=hyperallergic.com). Due to the cabin’s design, it’s believed that Finnish settlers in the New Sweden colony constructed the sturdy home. Harry Rink told the [*New York Times*](http://www.nytimes.com/2000/04/23/nyregion/on-the-map-this-old-house-is-really-old.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) that the “ironwork for hanging pots in the fireplace is from the 1590’s and was brought from Finland.” The cabin’s survival is partly because of the hardwood oak of its walls. However, its endurance is largely thanks to caring owners who have respected its historical heritage, and opened its doors to the community.
