VCU’s nationally ranked Department of Photography & Film MFA program seeks dynamic emerging artists whose work challenges common definitions of photography and film, while maintaining the disciplinary integrity of traditional practice. The department works to advance the highest standards of photography and film practices by cultivating an artistic community for the development and exchange of progressive visual ideas.

The VCU Photography and Film MFA program offers a truly one-of-a-kind studio/research experience. Guided by the mentorship of a diverse and distinguished faculty of artists, critics, and scholars, our students explore traditional and modern lens-based technology and processes while immersed in a broad spectrum of contemporary art. The curriculum is adaptable to each individual, allowing students to work in expanding traditional and contemporary genres and processes, including performance, docu-dramatic filmmaking, and multimedia installation.

All students are eligible for a variety of teaching assistantships, scholarships, and research grants that provide financial support, as well as “real world” leadership roles within the department. Each student is provided a private studio, use of state-of-the-art audio, lighting, and camera technologies, and 24/7 access to digital/analog production studios and editing labs.

In addition, the Department of Photography and Film’s widely respected visiting artist/scholar program is a major part of VCU’s graduate curriculum and exemplifies the vibrant creative encounters provided to students.

Application deadline is January 15. To learn more, visit the department website, email, and follow VCU Photography and Film on Instagram/Facebook/Tumblr.
