# 250 New Emoji Are on the Way

The [Unicode Consortium](http://unicode-inc.blogspot.com/2014/06/announcing-unicode-standard-version-70.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) (which sounds like a comic book crime organization) has released approximately 250 emoji as part of Version 7.0 of the Unicode Standard, which includes 2,834 new characters.

Among the [new emoji](http://emojipedia.org/new-emoji/?ref=hyperallergic.com) are a White Sun (*huh?*), Hot Pepper (*hot!*), Derelict House Building (*gentrification?*), lots of crosses (*White Latin Cross, Heavy Latin Cross, Celtic Cross*), Reversed Hand with Middle Finger Extended (*essentially fuck you, which* [*we hoped for*](https://hyperallergic.com/emojis-may-be-going-multiculti-but-what-about-art/)), Frame With Picture (*art!*), Rolled-Up Newspaper (*why?*), Wind Blowing Face (*soothing*), Man in Business Suit Levitating (*wtf!?*), and others.

Sadly, none of the newly announced emoji are going to [culturally diversify](https://hyperallergic.com/emojis-may-be-going-multiculti-but-what-about-art/) our pictograph selection much.
