Just when it seemed like the psychedelic music video trend was getting old, Japanese artist Kota Yamaji’s video for tilt-six’s track “あなくろノイズ has come along to melt your head. The squeaky electropop track clashes with Yamaji’s surreal visuals. In technicolor CGI, nude harlequin cyborgs float through gardens; schoolgirls turn oceans into wormholes; flowers bloom out of eyeballs and eyeballs pop out of blooming flowers. The track’s title translates to “Anachronism Noise,” and Yamaji mashes up anachronistic aesthetics — some dated, some futuristic.

The result looks like what might happen if Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds found herself in a post-human future instead of in a boat on a hippie river. There are definitely “kaleidoscope eyes” and “marmalade skies” here, but these trippy tropes are made strange and new again with digital animation and a healthful dose of sci-fi strangeness.
