When you show up to a Dynasty Handbag performance, you never quite know what you’re going to get. Maybe she’ll journey through her own internal organs in a sandwich container; maybe she’ll vogue while talk-singing unintelligible words. Either way, she’s bound to use her body to impeccable comedic effect, and to venture into profoundly absurd territory. As Alicia Eler and Alex Huntsberger once wrote for Hyperallergic, “Her work embraces a kind of middle space, a queering of traditional boundaries — expressing a kind of nihilism where maybe everything matters, maybe nothing matters, but either way, LOL.”
This Thursday, August 31, Handbag — who’s the alter ego of artist Jibz Cameron — will appear at Joe’s Pub for a reprise of I An, Moron — which I would call a one-woman show, except that it’s intended to spoof exactly that form, or, more accurately, to queer it. First performed last October at the Hammer Museum, the stand-up show touches on such topics as straight white women having babies, Rihanna, “coyote discrimination” (whatever that is), and much more. Or, as the event description explains, I An, Moron “takes a googley eyed macroscopic look into the climate of contemporary American white activism and its myriad ways to ‘resist’ while still maintaining bourgeois pour-over prison labor coffee and nut milk.” If that doesn’t sound like a show you need to see right now, I don’t know what is.
When: Thursday, August 31, 9pm ($20)
Where: Joe’s Pub (425 Lafayette Street, East Village, Manhattan)
