Emojicon Is Coming to Brooklyn

On July 14, three days before World Emoji Day, Emojination is hosting the second-ever Emojicon, a celebration of all things emoji. The day long conference and party will be held at the Bell House in Brooklyn.

Emojicon BK 2018 will be a day of conversations featuring multidisciplinary thinkers and experts from around the world, alongside curated emoji art + interactive exhibits, and the popular Emoji Party 🎉💃! There will be foods that are also emoji 🌮🍰🍦🍭 and an emoji costume contest🧚‍♂️👩‍🎤🧞‍♀️👾🤖.

Exploring representation and boundaries of emoji and visual communication, and the intersection of politics, globalization, and digital communication, Emojicon will open a space to reimagine the future. “Unicode has evolved enormously in the past 4-5 years and serves as a good example of an institution undergoing self-reflection and openness to change when it comes to whose voices are represented at the decision-making table.” says Jeanne Brooks, Emojination Co-Founder, and Emojicon Lead Producer. “Emojination has served as a liaison between Unicode and the community. At Emojicon we’ll take that even further, to incubate new ideas for reimagining the systems around visual communication.”

The Emoji Art & Interactive Gallery will feature curated emoji art and interactive installations exploring the boundaries of how we communicate with emoji. The exhibition will include a selection of Yung Jake’s well-known emoji portraits (and his emoji ink drawing station), ZhenZhen Qi’s Emojiface (an interactive installation that replaces audiences’ heads with 3d virtual emojis), tournament rounds of Moji Match, and more.

Since 2016, Emojination has been working to democratize the emoji approval process. The community has now successfully created nearly 100 emojis in just three updates.

Emojicon is the flagship gathering for the Emojination community and the public to come together to discuss and celebrate all things emoji. Emojicon is a welcoming space that gathers people from different walks of life, perspectives, and expertise.

“In a true effort to democratize the conversation around emoji and the power centers of visual communication,” explains Brooks. “We’re opening up the event to all who want to attend.”
