Jason Hackenwerth’s “Animal Soul”(2018).

Known for his temporary installations sculpted from balloons, artist Jason Hackenwerth has created three new otherworldly creatures in the form of larger-than-life-sized inflatable sculptures for the Waterfront Plaza at Brookfield Place in NYC, which will be on view and free to the public from July 11–15.

In addition to the installation, this Thursday is your chance to dance among the Animal Soul and Megamite wearable sculptures as they bounce to the beat of “quiet” DJs from 6–9 pm.

The installation started with an invitation by Arts Brookfield to create sculptures that competed and contrasted with modern high-rise buildings such as at Brookfield Place. Hackenwerth decided on brightly colored inflatables resembling either prehistoric or futuristic four-legged animals.

Visitors can also experience Hackenwerth’s custom Megamite sculptures that are worn by performers during select hours during the installation. Hackenwerth has created five new designs, each an exotic organism that connects with passersby as they playfully move throughout the Brookfield Place, NY.
