On Thursday, Fridman Gallery will host multimedia artist Nina Katchadourian’s “On-Hold Music Dance Party” (2017) in conjunction with their current exhibition, Katchadourian’s Ification. Katchadourian spent several years recording the music that played while she was placed on hold during phone calls. She then collaborated with Jule Covello (DJ Shakey) and Gabriel Willow (DJ Stylus), to New York-based DJs, to “sample, chop, loop, and mix the music with other “phone matter,’” according the Fridman Gallery’s website. “Phone matter” included dial tones and voice prompts, among other sounds. The resulting experience is then meant to transform on-hold music “into something highly activated, energized, and physically engaging.”
In her work, Katchadourian employs video, performance, sound, sculpture, photography, and public projects. This event is free and open to the public and is a part of Ification, will will be up through March 31.
Ification, for those who may not know, is actually a condensed version of the artist’s mid-career retrospective that was exhibited at the Blanton Museum in Austin, Texas, and the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University in California. So, if you missed it, here’s your chance to catch it.
