ArtYard is pleased to present its fall exhibition, Shelter Is, featuring Jumana Manna, Lucy + Jorge Orta, Heather Hart, Maria Gaspar, Lucia Thomé, Mariel Capanna, Erin Diebboll, and Thilde Jensen. The works on view consider both the physical and psychological function of shelter, its construction, and its improvisational nature. They also explore questions of who seeks shelter, and for what reasons — political, socioeconomic, or environmental.
This exhibition was first set to open on May 2, 2020, but was delayed due to COVID-19. Now months into a global pandemic in which housing insecurity, financial instability, and a disparity in access to resources is a reality for millions of people across the planet, the need to collectively consider the right to shelter and security is more necessary than ever.
In addition to the exhibition on view in its gallery, ArtYard also has two outdoor installations accessible via the towpath behind ArtYard: Greenware by Lucia Thomé, which is presented in conjunction with Shelter Is, and Three Mothers, Jesse Wright’s monumental portraits of Mamie Till-Mobley, Larcenia “Cissy” Floyd, and Eileen Wright.
ArtYard’s gallery is now open to the public on Fridays through Sundays until December 28. Visitors can plan their trips in advance by making reservations online. Check out artyard.org/artyard-reopens for more information on visitor and staff policy in light of COVID-19.
