With tomorrow ushering in Barack Obama’s second term as President, Weekend Words has the audacity to hope that F. Scott Fitzgerald was wrong, and that there are indeed second acts in American lives.

“All things have a second birth;
The earthquake is not satisfied at once.”

—William Wordsworth, The Prelude

“You can’t step in the same river twice.”

—Heraclitus

“All discarded lovers should be given a second chance, but with somebody else.”

—Mae West

Hyperallergic's Weekend editors are Natalie Haddad, Thomas Micchelli, Albert Mobilio, and John Yau.

  1. didn’t know it was a second act. so does this mean he’s going to be the hero to everyone this time around. he’s failing at it so far.
