The Village Voice reports that New York will be welcoming street pianos from June 21 to July 5. Yes, for part of this summer, America’s Next Top Pianist will be performed in the streets of all five boroughs (map of locations).

BroadwayWorld.com summarizes the project:

Sing for Hope (www.singforhope.org), a public service organization for artists, announces that it is installing 60 pianos in the parks and public spaces of the city’s five boroughs to be available to all who pass by …  “street pianos” are part of Play Me, I’m Yours, a worldwide public art project.

Originated by British artist Luke Jerram, Play Me, I’m Yours is an international artwork and has previously brought music to the streets of London, São Paulo, Bristol, Birmingham, and Sydney in 2009.

The New York Times covered the London incarnation of Play Me, I’m Yours.

The idea in theory sounds great but I’m pretty sure New Yorkers will find a way to vandalize, destroy or maybe even explode people’s ear drums using some of these otherwise benign musical instruments — we’re a creative bunch.
