Alexander Doolan, “Sunburn” (2013)

Opening at Show Room gallery in the Lower East Side this Friday, April 12, from 6 to 9 pm is Brooklyn College’s MFA thesis exhibition, 12 (twelve) noun /ˈtwɛlv/ is the natural number following 11 and preceding 13, curated by Rachel Gugelberger. The exhibition features the work of 12 emerging artists drawn from the college’s program.

The exhibition, as is shown by its unorthodox title, is unconcerned with providing a particular theme or brand for its participants. Rather, it’s a way to showcase the school and the artists’ own individuality. Tucked away in the middle of Brooklyn, with wild parrots roaming a Georgian-style campus, Brooklyn College is home to non-conformists. That rebellious spirit will be on display in the work on view in the upcoming exhibition.

Artists Jeannine Bardo, Nicole Donnelly, and Cecilia Whitaker-Doe contemplate our relationship to the natural world in intimate works that include prints, painting, stop-motion animation video, weavings, and artist books. Anna Hoberman and Mitch Patrick organize evidence of human use — handwriting and digital marks — into serial prints, illuminated 3D works, and videos that serve as archives of images and information. The socially charged hybrid paintings of Samuel Jablon and Andrew Kennedy respond to the cacophony of advertising and deluge of media in our digital world.

Kate McGraw, “Chouffe Mountain” (2012-13)

John Ros reclaims liminal space, assembling site-responsive installations that speak to the waste inherent in consumption and artistic practices. Through her sweetly surreal installations, Kate McGraw creates an alternative, meditative realm for the viewer. With varying perspectives, Nick Stolle, Alexander Doolan, and Anthony Randell reflect on the possibilities of art and their individual relationships to the materials they use, from painting to found objects, sound, performance, and photography.

Bound in dialogue by respect and admiration, each artist provides a unique and personal reflection on our cultural moment and their own place in it. Forever looking at the world from a canted perspective, these young artists are reshaping how we encounter the aesthetic environment.

12 (twelve) noun /ˈtwɛlv/ is the natural number following 11 and preceding 13 runs at Show Room (170 Suffolk Street, Manhattan) through April 28. A series of events will accompany the exhibition.
