Editor’s Note: This event is part of the 2021/22 Emily Hall Tremaine Journalism Fellowship for Curators, following three posts by the Fellow, the third of which is an email-only exhibition that was sent to all Hyperallergic newsletter subscribers.

On Tuesday, February 15, at 7pm (EST), join us for a special event with Frederica Simmons as she discusses the work of Bessie Harvey (1929–94), a self-taught artist from the Black American South who created mixed-media assemblages from materials located in the woods surrounding her home.

The conversation will critically investigate Harvey’s rich portfolio of work, a selection of which is featured in Simmons’s Hyperallergic email exhibition. The ensuing event will focus on how the artist, as a Black woman in the United States, infused her work with complex ideas about humanity, racism, and religion while maintaining her contemporary identity; and the necessity of conscious curation for uplifting Black narratives.

Frederica Simmons

Frederica Simmons is a Black emerging curator based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Born and raised in the Southside of the city, Frederica has contributed to the preservation of ephemeral street art and associated memory through advocacy and praxis in the wake of the murder of George Floyd mere blocks from her family home. As a member of the Urban Art Mapping Project since 2020, she has contributed to the project’s George Floyd and Anti-Racist Street Art database, which seeks to document street art from around the world that was created in the aftermath of the murder of Floyd as part of an ongoing movement demanding social justice and equality. She prioritizes uplifting frequently overlooked narratives in art history through her pursuits, with her research concerning three areas and their intersections: Black studies; feminist, gender, and sexuality studies; history of art and visual studies. She has been the Curatorial Department Assistant for the Department of European Art at the Minneapolis Institute of Art since 2019.
