Active between 1973 and 1991, the [Woman’s Building](http://thewomansbuilding.org/?ref=hyperallergic.com) in Downtown LA was a major hub of female-centered and feminist art practice, performance, education, and activism. Founded by artist [Judy Chicago](https://hyperallergic.com/134957/the-birth-and-education-of-judy-chicago/), graphic designer Sheila Levrant de Bretteville, and art historian Arlene Raven, the center housed a series of important programs including the Women’s Graphic Center, the Feminist Studio Workshop, the Center for Feminist Art Historical Studies, LA Women’s Video Center, and the Lesbian Art Project.

As part of their project exploring the [Woman’s Building’s archives](http://www.metabolicstudio.org/page/womans-building-archive?ref=hyperallergic.com), Metabolic Studio granted fellowships to 15 artists to create works that engaged with its legacy. The resulting works of visual art, performance, and social practice can be seen in [*Animating the Archives: The Woman’s Building*](http://thewomansbuilding.org/AnimatingTheArchives.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) which opens this Saturday at [Avenue 50 Studio](http://avenue50studio.org/?ref=hyperallergic.com). Contributions include handmade [Avest Awards created by Onya Hogan-Finlay and Phranc](http://thewomansbuilding.org/Phranc.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) that pay tribute to 10 notable women in the arts in Southern California; Teresa Flores’s and Maryam Hosseinzadeh’s updated versions of [Mary-Linn Hughes’s 1984 “BrokenHeartArtCards](http://thewomansbuilding.org/Teresa.html?ref=hyperallergic.com),” which use humor to call out and attack misogyny; and documentation of [Felicia ‘Fe’ Montes’s performance ritual](http://thewomansbuilding.org/Felicia.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) linking contemporary activist group [Mujeres de Maiz](http://www.mujeresdemaiz.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com) with their Chicana predecessors at the Woman’s Building. A [series of performances, talks, and workshops](http://thewomansbuilding.org/AnimatingTheArchives.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) will take place during the exhibition’s run.
