Erroneously considered by some to be simply a static, impenetrable barrier, the US-Mexico border is actually a site of cultural, commercial, and social exchange that has changed drastically over the course of its history. From July 28 to 30, the Velaslavasay Panorama — a movie theater-cum-art installation and event space — will be presenting [*A Border Peepshow*](http://www.panoramaonview.org/upcoming-events?ref=hyperallergic.com), an exhibition of several peepshow boxes housing photographs of the San Diego/Tijuana border from 1887, 1927, 1967, and 2017.

The exhibition is a collaboration with [Parkeology](http://parkeology.org/?ref=hyperallergic.com), a series of live events and web programs that explores the unknown histories of urban parks. Last month, the peepshows were featured in Parkeology’s [Border Trolley Tours](http://parkeology.org/border-trolley-tours/?ref=hyperallergic.com), public tours between Balboa Park and San Ysidro that recalled a much more fluid conception of the border, dating back to the [Panama-California Exposition](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panama%E2%80%93California%5FExposition?ref=hyperallergic.com) more than a century ago. The Panorama’s display will also feature audio recordings from the Border Trolley Tours including interviews with area residents and a biologist and naturalist who studies local flora and fauna, which will no doubt experience negative consequences if President Trump ever makes good on his threats of building an [expanded and reinforced border wall](https://hyperallergic.com/six-designs-for-trumps-border-wall-from-solar-panels-to-a-mexican-american-co-nation/). After this weekend, the boxes will travel to Berlin, the site of another highly contested border, for the exhibition [*Tunnel below/Skyjacking above: Deconstructing the Border*](http://ngbk.de/development/index.php?option=com%5Fcontent&view=article&id=502:tunnel-below-skyjacking-above-deconstructing-the-border&catid=11&Itemid=315&lang=en&ref=hyperallergic.com) at NGBK.
