Sweet in that I thought it might afford me the perfect excuse to go full cozy-mode after the intense socializing and aggressive pizzazz of Armory Week, but bitter in that, on top of the fact that the soles of my sneakers are still damp after mandatory ventures (see: things I RSVP’d yes to), I genuinely hate the rain. On the flip side, I credit the lingering storm with flushing out the opaque remnants of last week for me. While I embrace the amnesia, plenty of others were strong enough to keep their eyes wide open all seven days and actually process what they saw. Bless them. Stephanie Wambugu, author of *Lonely Crowds* (2025)*,* writes about the limits and achievements of Arthur Jafa’s retrospective at the New Museum, identifying a trail of prescriptive esotericism between the art, its curation, and its title, *I Am Tony*. Along Museum Mile, veteran critic Aruna D’Souza takes her magnifying glass to Taryn Simon’s spiral of connective curiosity around the Guggenheim’s rotunda in *Father Country I Do Love You*. And across the river, contributor Alex Santana questions the aesthetic power of distilled violence, as presented in Teresa Margolles’s solo exhibition at MoMA PS1\. Those who prefer more tangible experiences might turn their attention to the Museum of the City of New York, which just inaugurated its new permanent exhibition devoted to the anatomy of activism through 250 years of history and ephemera of organizing in the Big Apple. And to those who want to lean into the esoteric — well, there are only five days left of the Morgan Library & Museum’s massive tarot exhibition! Amid the buzz of art fairs (you can find our extensive coverage further down) and exhibition openings, NYC’s cultural labor force is seizing the opportunity to advocate for fair contracts at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the American Folk Art Museum. Unionized staff at the latter two institutions are deliberating on tentative agreements proposed in the last few days, while the Whitney union set October 5 as its strike deadline. In my perpetual quest for a proper laugh, I had the pleasure of watching John Wilson’s debut feature documentary, [*The History of Concrete*](https://www.magpictures.com/thehistoryofconcrete/?ref=hyperallergic.com) (2026), with a friend yesterday night. Despite my mistake in committing to a 9:15 pm screening, I was delighted by Wilson’s radical exploration of lateral thinking, as well as a humor profile I would argue rivals that of the first three seasons of SpongeBob. Occupying two levels of the Lower Manhattan institution, the exhibition is densely packed with work that ventures beyond the video art that has made Jafa one of America’s most important living artists. The largest exhibition of his work to date, its ambitions — which it achieves with mixed results — seem to be to engage in the same themes Jafa has continually mined, this time in even more idiosyncratic and brash ways.
