She studied with postmodern dance pioneer [Anna Halprin](https://www.annahalprin.org/?ref=hyperallergic.com) in the early 1960s before becoming a founding member of the [Judson Dance Theater](http://www.danceheritage.org/judsondt.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) in 1962, eventually forming [her own company](http://www.trishabrowncompany.org/?ref=hyperallergic.com) in 1970\. Brown’s choreography developed from the modern dance tradition, while at the same time challenging its austerity, leaving the confines of the theater for site-specific works on rooftops or aboard rafts floating in bodies if water. In recognition of Brown’s influential role, the Center for the Art of Performance (CAP) at UCLA — along with the Broad, the Getty, LACMA, and Hauser & Wirth — has organized [In Plain Site](http://cap.ucla.edu/trishabrown/?ref=hyperallergic.com), a weeklong series of performances, talks, and events.
