# The Summer's Hottest Nonfiction Comes Together at AFI Docs

The [American Film Institute](https://www.afi.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com)'s film festival [AFI Docs](https://docs.afi.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com) has brought the latest documentaries to the DC area each summer since 2003\. Like many other festivals, it's incorporated an online component this year, allowing viewers around the country to check out its program. Ren Scateni has already praised the selection [*North By Current*](https://docs.afi.com/2021/feature-films-2021/north-by-current?ref=hyperallergic.com) [for Hyperallergic](https://hyperallergic.com/angelo-madsen-max-north-by-current-tribeca-film-festival-review/). Other films in the lineup include [a 20th-anniversary look at the events of 9/11](https://docs.afi.com/2021/series-2021/9-11-one-day-in-america?ref=hyperallergic.com); a [biography of Anthony Bourdain](https://docs.afi.com/2021/special-presentations-2021/roadrunner-a-film-about-anthony-bourdain?ref=hyperallergic.com); and [an archival revival of a landmark Black concert](https://docs.afi.com/2021/feature-films-2021/summer-of-soul-or-when-the-revolution-could-not-be-televised?ref=hyperallergic.com), as well as new films by [Kevin Jerome Everson](https://docs.afi.com/2021/short-film-competition-2021/the-i-and-s-of-lives?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Garrett Bradley](https://docs.afi.com/2021/special-presentations-2021/naomi-osaka?ref=hyperallergic.com), and [Sergei Loznitsa](https://docs.afi.com/2021/short-film-competition-2021/a-night-at-the-opera?ref=hyperallergic.com).
