Almost 40 years later, on the occasion of the work’s return to New York, Editor-in-Chief Hakim Bishara sits down with the artist to talk about “America” and a US that is radically transformed and yet, Jaar says, essentially the same. He’s a pessimist of the intellect — hard not to be, right? — but certainly a warrior at heart. To Jaar’s point, it’s not 1987 anymore, but we’ve got yet another strongman leader waging yet another culture war here in the US. Trump’s latest target: abstract sculpture? He wants to erect a 30-foot-tall statue of George Washington in place of José de Rivera’s rotating stainless steel Möbius strip outside the National Museum of American History in Washington, which, in his words, “tells visitors nothing about America, inspires no one, and honors none of our Great American Heroes.” Tell me you don’t understand art without telling me you don’t understand art, Mr. President. It instantly became one of the most discussed works of political art in the contemporary canon. Appearing between ads for tomato sauce and a Mexican restaurant, the 42-second LED animation bewildered New Yorkers with the message “This Is Not America” superimposed on a map of the United States, followed by an image of the US flag with the text, “This Is Not America’s Flag.” Next, the “R” in America shifted into a dancing map of South, Central, and North America. The message to US citizens and their leaders was simple but provocative: Stop hijacking the name “America” while you’re just one of many countries in it.
