# An Artists’ Conversation on Immigration at the Museum of Latin American Art

Current polemics against immigration tend to paint the issue as black and white, ignoring all nuance by dividing people into two categories: lawful citizens or “illegals.” This simplistic dichotomy overlooks complex networks of culture, economics, and family that have defined our country for centuries.

This Friday, Long Beach’s Museum of Latin American Art hosts a conversation on [Art and Immigration](https://www.molaa.org/events/art-art-immigration/?ref=hyperallergic.com) led by [Dr. Catha Paquette](http://www.art.csulb.edu/faculty/profile/index.php?fullname=Paquette%5FCatha&part=bio&pkey=221&ref=hyperallergic.com), professor of Latin American art at California State University, Long Beach. Focusing specifically on artistic responses to immigration from Mexico and Latin America, discussion participants include [Narsiso Martínez](https://www.csulb.edu/article/csulb-artist-draws-inspiration-fields?ref=hyperallergic.com), who draws on his experience as a farm worker to portray these often invisible but essential members of our labor force, and [Cintia Alejandra Segovia](http://www.cintiasegovia.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), who creates humorous photo and video works, such as building a “[Big, Beautiful Wall](https://vimeo.com/190507440?ref=hyperallergic.com)” out of typical Mexican foodstuffs.
