An original drawing from Herge’s [Tintin](http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-34451285?ref=hyperallergic.com) adventure *The Blue Lotus* sold for $1.25 million at the Artcurial auction house in Hong Kong.

The Gulf Center for Human Rights reported that Syrian cartoonist [Akram Raslan](https://hyperallergic.com/cartoonist-pronounced-dead-believed-murdered-by-syrian-regime/) was tortured and killed by Syrian government forces in 2013.

The city of [Atlanta](http://buzz.blog.ajc.com/2015/10/02/atlanta-to-repeal-photography-ordinance-deemed-unconstitutional/?ref=hyperallergic.com) will repeal an ordinance concerning street photography following complaints that it directly violates the first amendment. Drafted in 1977, the ordinance forbids the taking of photographs outside places of business “unless the person shall have secured and have with such person at the time the written consent of the owner or manager of that place of business.”

The [Fundación Via Libre](https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/09/argentina-proposes-100-year-plus-copyright-extension-photography?ref=hyperallergic.com), an Argentinian digital rights organization, launched a campaign against a government bill seeking to retroactively extend copyright protections for photography.

A small (and rather cheeky) painting of [Pablo Picasso](http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2015/oct/09/picasso-la-gommeuse-blue-period-auction?ref=hyperallergic.com)‘s friend and roommate Pere Mañach was discovered on the reverse of “La Gommeuse” (1901), one of the artist’s Blue Period works.

[Spectacle](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1138625352/spectacle-theater-south-3rd-street-forever?ref=hyperallergic.com), the non-profit, Williamsburg-based cinema renowned for its programming, is looking to raise $35,000 on Kickstarter following a recent rent increase.

New Democratic Party (NDP) leader [Tom Mulcair](http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canada-election-2015-mulcair-arts-cbc-1.3257244?ref=hyperallergic.com) vowed to provide $60 million in funding to the Canada Council for the Arts, Telefilm Canada, and the National Film Board, should he be elected Canada’s next prime minister.

[Jeffrey Deitch](http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/arts/culture/la-et-cm-jeffrey-deitch-wolfpack-documentary-20151007-story.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) plans to open an exhibition dedicated to the homemade films and props of the Angulo Brothers, the subjects of Crystal Moselle’s documentary [*The Wolfpack*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDbqcMfUdlI&ref=hyperallergic.com) (2015).

According to the *Deccan Herald*, architectural artifacts from the city of [Chandigarh](http://www.deccanherald.com/content/504830/chandigarhs-architects-artefacts-fetch-millions.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) — whose master plan was designed by Le Corbusier — are being sold off as “junk” before being transported to western auction houses.

The [Museum of Fine Arts, Boston](http://www.bostonglobe.com/arts/theater-art/2015/10/05/seldom-seen-bust-displayed-honor-curator-sacrifice/sRlRAfnDDYV8sLIV9rP8pL/story.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) exhibited an antique funerary relief from Palmyra in tribute to [Khaled al-Asaad](https://hyperallergic.com/isis-murders-former-chief-of-antiquities-in-palmyra/). The archeologist was beheaded by ISIS militants for refusing to reveal the location of protected antiquities.

The [Getty Research Institute](http://blogs.getty.edu/iris/second-half-of-knoedler-gallery-stock-books-database-now-online/?ref=hyperallergic.com) published the second half of the Knoedler Gallery’s stock database, which dates from 1921–70.

A glow-in-the-dark skate park designed by artist [Koo Jeong A](http://uk.whaatsnew.com/2015/10/news/24225?ref=hyperallergic.com) opened in Liverpool.

Four paintings by [James Hesketh Biggs](http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2015/oct/05/colonel-biggs-paintings-of-incalculable-value-discovered-in-unmarked-envelope?ref=hyperallergic.com) (aka Colonel Biggs) were discovered in an unmarked envelope by two Adelaide booksellers.

A house in Madison, Wisconsin, was attributed to [Frank Lloyd Wright](http://host.madison.com/wsj/entertainment/arts%5Fand%5Ftheatre/visual/frank-lloyd-wright-house-found-in-madison/article%5Fd64c6c9a-c3f0-59f0-b16e-4e8a28d546f8.html?ref=hyperallergic.com).

A [woolly mammoth](http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-34435161?ref=hyperallergic.com) skeleton was discovered by two farmers in Michigan.

[*Altered State: Marijuana in California*](http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/arts/miranda/la-et-cam-oakland-museum-first-ever-marijuana-museum-exhibit-20151005-column.html?ref=hyperallergic.com), an exhibition dedicated to the history and culture of the drug, will open at the Oakland Museum of California next year.

A print of [Robert Mapplethorpe](http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2015/photographs-n09405/lot.144.html?ref=hyperallergic.com)‘s “Man in Polyester Suit” (1980) sold for $478,000 (including the buyer’s premium) at Sotheby’s. The work was infamously cited by [Senator Jesse Helms](http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/02/arts/design/mapplethorpe-print-at-center-of-culture-wars-returns-to-public-eye.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) as an example of “filthy art.”

An oil sketch by [John Constable](http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-suffolk-34460699?ref=hyperallergic.com) was sold at Bearnes Hampton and Littlewood auction house for £252,000 (\~$386,000). According to auctioneer Dan Goddard, the work was previously owned by Constable’s son, Lionel Bicknell Constable.

David M. Rubenstein donated $25 million to [Duke University](http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/10/05/david-rubenstein-makes-25-million-gift-to-support-arts-at-duke-university/?%5Fr=1&ref=hyperallergic.com). Part of the gift will be used to fund a new 71,000-square-foot arts building.

The [Phillips Collection and the University of Maryland](http://www.artnews.com/2015/10/05/phillips-collection-and-university-of-maryland-partner-will-launch-new-gallery-research-projects/?ref=hyperallergic.com) embarked on a six-year partnership to develop educational curricula and programming, as well as a new gallery and open-storage facility.

The Blockade Runner, the first ship to appear on screen in *Star Wars* (1977) sold at the same auction for $450,000.

New York City residents will be granted free entry to [MoMA PS1](https://hyperallergic.com/moma-ps1-will-be-free-for-all-new-yorkers-for-a-year/) for a year starting October 11\. Free admission was made possible by a grant from the Anna-Maria and Stephen Keller Foundation.
