[Gilbert & George](https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2016/jun/03/gilbert-george-to-create-gallery-in-londons-east-end?ref=hyperallergic.com) will convert a home in their longtime east London neighborhood of Spitalfields into a nonprofit contemporary art gallery.

The block of West 103rd Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue has been renamed [Norman Rockwell Place](http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/09/nyregion/manhattan-street-is-renamed-after-norman-rockwell.html?smid=tw-nytmetro&smtyp=cur&%5Fr=0&ref=hyperallergic.com) — it is where the artist’s family lived when he was born, and where he lived until he was in his 20s.

Archaeologists at Beijing’s Palace Museum found what they believe to be the remains of [Kublai Khan’s Yuan dynasty imperial palace](http://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/1969971/greatest-palace-ever-was-chinese-archaeologists-find-evidence?ref=hyperallergic.com).

Art collector Ronald S. Lauder and actress Helen Mirren participated in a Senate hearing to voice their [support of a bill](http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/08/arts/design/senate-bill-would-help-recover-art-stolen-by-nazis.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) that would make it easier for Holocaust victims and their heirs to pursue the restitution of art looted by the Nazis.

Russian artist [Petr Pavlensky](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jun/08/russian-court-frees-radical-performance-artist-petr-pavlensky?ref=hyperallergic.com) was released, but forced to pay fines and fees totaling nearly 1 million rubbles (\~$15,500) for a performance in which he set fire to the door of the headquarters of the Federal Security Service (FSB) in Moscow.

The former director of Russia’s National Centre for Contemporary Arts, [Mikhail Mindlin](http://theartnewspaper.com/news/news/shake-up-in-moscow-s-contemporary-art-scene/?ref=hyperallergic.com), was questioned by the FSB in relation to the same corruption investigation that recently landed the country’s deputy culture minister in jail.

The [Bronx Museum](http://theartnewspaper.com/news/news/bronx-museum-postpones-show-after-cuba-halts-loans-to-us/?ref=hyperallergic.com) postponed a planned exhibition of works from the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana after Cuban officials voiced fears that the work would be seized once it arrived on US soil to satisfy the claims of US citizens whose property in Cuba was confiscated following Fidel Castro’s rise to power in 1959.

A prototype for a floating school designed by Nigerian architect [Kunlé Adeyemi](http://www.dezeen.com/2016/06/08/kunle-adeyemi-nle-makoko-floating-school-nigeria-destroyed-abrupt-collapse/?ref=hyperallergic.com) collapsed in Lagos.

The [Garage Museum of Contemporary Art](http://artforum.com/news/id=60497?ref=hyperallergic.com) in Moscow will launch a triennial devoted to Russian art in 2017.

The [J. Paul Getty Museum](http://news.getty.edu/press%5Fmaterials.cfm?ref=hyperallergic.com#2-3-6079) added two antiquities to its collection: a Roman marble head and a Geometric Greek vase.

The Carnegie Museum of Art (CMOA) and the San Jose Museum of Art (SJMA) wagered loans of works from their permanent collections on the outcome of the [2016 Stanley Cup Finals](http://www.npr.org/2016/06/09/481295921/stanley-cup-inspires-artwork-bet-highbrow-trash-talk-between-2-museums?ref=hyperallergic.com), in which the Pittsburgh Penguins are facing the San Jose Sharks. If the Penguins win, the Carnegie will receive the Larry Sultan photo “Mom Posing by Green Wall and Dad Watching T.V.” (1984); if the Sharks win, the SJMA will receiveMel Bochner’s “Measurement: Plant (Palm)” (1969).

[Old Dominion University](http://pilotonline.com/news/local/education/higher-education/barry-family-gives-odu-largest-donation-in-school-s-history/article%5Feb508a16-461e-52c7-a531-c794f6ddd4bd.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) received a $35 million donation from Richard and Carolyn Barry to build a new art museum.

[Hamilton College](http://www.hamilton.edu/news/story/college-receives-6-million-for-arts-programming-from-alumnus-fund?ref=hyperallergic.com) received $6 million to go toward arts programing from a fund established by late alumnus Daniel W. Dietrich II.

The [Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit](http://www.artnews.com/2016/06/08/mocad-receives-100000-matching-grant-in-support-of-mike-kelleys-mobile-homestead/?ref=hyperallergic.com) received a $100,000 matching grant in support of programming at Mike Kelley’s “Mobile Homestead” (2013).

The [Institute of Contemporary Art / Boston](https://www.icaboston.org/articles/institute-contemporary-artboston-announces-major-acquisition-steve-mcqueen%E2%80%99s-ashes?ref=hyperallergic.com) acquired Steve McQueen’s video installation “Ashes” (2002–15).

Amsterdam’s [Van Gogh Museum](http://www.vangoghmuseum.nl/en/about-the-museum/press/press-releases/new-acquisition-the-grape-harvest-by-bastien-lepage?ref=hyperallergic.com) acquired Jules Bastien-Lepage’s painting “The Grape Harvest” (1880).
