Newly discovered sketches suggest that [Vincent van Gogh](http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-36772253?ref=hyperallergic.com) cut off his entire ear as opposed to just part of it. The drawings, which were made by the artist’s physician Dr. Felix Ray, were discovered by Bernadette Murphy in a Californian archive.

The NYPD placed the [Jack Shainman Gallery](http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/15/us/artist-flag-protests-lynching-by-police.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) on “special alert” following threats made in response to its display of Dread Scott’s flag “[A Man Was Lynched by Police Yesterday](https://hyperallergic.com/a-man-was-lynched-by-police-yesterday-flag-goes-up-in-new-york-city/)” (2015).

A cross-party group of British MPs (members of parliament) introduced a bill for the repatriation of the [Parthenon Marbles](https://hyperallergic.com/british-mps-propose-bill-to-return-the-elgin-marbles-to-greece/) to Greece.

The Human Rights Foundation stripped [Pyotr Pavlensky](http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/russian-artist-pavlensky-stripped-of-award-over-support-for-police-killers/574585.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) of the Vaclav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent after the artist expressed support for the [Primorye Partisans](http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-11829793?ref=hyperallergic.com).

The German parliament passed the [Cultural Property Protection Law](http://theartnewspaper.com/news/news/german-parliament-passes-controversial-law-to-protect-culture/?ref=hyperallergic.com). The controversial legislation, which seeks to tackle illegal antiquities trafficking, faced significant opposition from art dealers and collectors.

Sotheby’s will host a three-part sale of [David Bowie](https://hyperallergic.com/gavel-gavel-your-arts-a-success-david-bowies-collection-heads-to-auction/)‘s art collection in November. The collection includes works by Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland, Frank Auerbach, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Harold Gilman, and Damien Hirst.

Over 30 books on [Wassily Kandinsky](https://twitter.com/thegetty/status/753627717157941248?ref=hyperallergic.com) from the Guggenheim Museum’s Library were digitized and made available on the Getty Museum’s [website](http://portal.getty.edu/search?q=kandinsky&from=0&size=25&sort=relevance&grp%5Fcontributor=Solomon%20R.%20Guggenheim%20Museum%20Library&utm%5Fcontent=buffer2f5f4&utm%5Fmedium=social&utm%5Fsource=twitter.com&utm%5Fcampaign=buffer).

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced that it will install 12 mosaic portraits by [Chuck Close](http://untappedcities.com/2016/07/07/mta-will-install-12-mosaic-portraits-by-chuck-close-in-the-second-avenue-subway/?ref=hyperallergic.com) at the new Second Avenue and 86th Street stop.

[Deborah Thorpe](https://www.theguardian.com/books/2016/jul/12/medieval-doodles-margins-blame-children-book-14th-century-monk?ref=hyperallergic.com), a research fellow at the University of York, concluded that the marginalia in a medieval manuscript held at the University of Pennsylvania includes doodles made by children. Thorpe’s findings were published in the [*Cogent Arts and Humanities* journal](http://cogentoa.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/23311983.2016.1196864?ref=hyperallergic.com).

The [June 4th Museum](http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/13/world/asia/tiananmen-june-4-protest-museum-hong-kong.html?ref=hyperallergic.com), the Hong Kong institution dedicated to the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, closed. According to the *New York Times*, the museum’s operators claimed to have suffered “continued legal harassment” from the corporation that owns the building.

Canadian art thief [John Tillman](http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/john-mark-tillman-art-parole-1.3675580?ref=hyperallergic.com) was granted full parole after serving just over two years of a nine year [prison sentence](https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/ice-returns-stolen-charles-darwin-book?ref=hyperallergic.com).

Malaysian photographer [Keow Wee Loong](https://www.facebook.com/uglykiwi/media%5Fset?set=a.1108392955906984.1073741934.100002088711813&type=3) claimed to have snuck into Fukushima. The photographer posted a number of images of abandoned stores and homes on his Facebook page. The city remans heavily radiated following the 2011 [Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fukushima%5FDaiichi%5Fnuclear%5Fdisaster?ref=hyperallergic.com).

Brooke Shields assisted artist [Will Kurtz](http://pagesix.com/2016/07/11/brooke-shields-goes-dumpster-diving-for-trashy-sculpture/?ref=hyperallergic.com) in reconstructing one of his sculptures after part of it was accidentally thrown away by cleaners at the Art Southampton fair. The $8,000 sculpture, which is entitled “Keep America Great Again,” depicts a raccoon standing beside an overflowing trash can.
