The government shutdown is over; and [**the Smithsonian Institutions museums have reopened**](http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/dc-tourism-sites-prepare-to-welcome-visitors-again-as-shutdown-ends/2013/10/17/d2c99dc8-3722-11e3-89db-8002ba99b894%5Fstory.html?ref=hyperallergic.com), although they estimate that they lost around $2.8 million in revenue due to the closures.

A 1950 bronze sculpture by Henry Moore worth an estimated £3 million [**was stolen out of the Glenkiln Sculpture Park**](http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/home-news/three-men-sought-over-theft-of-3m-henry-moore-statue.1381934783?ref=hyperallergic.com) in Scotland.

This Tuesday, descendents of the family that owned a frieze by Gustav Klimt that was stolen in World War II [**filed a claim against the Austrian government for its return**](http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/16/arts/design/heirs-press-austria-to-return-looted-klimt-frieze.html?ref=hyperallergic.com).

William Kentridge’s installation “The Refusal of Time” [**has been jointly acquired by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art**](http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/17/arts/design/one-met-isnt-enough.html?%5Fr=0&ref=hyperallergic.com), the first partnership of its kind for the Met, the *New York Times* reports.

Six artifacts that [**were stolen from Zimbabwe’s National Art Gallery have been recovered**](http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/oct/11/operation-recovers-stolen-zimbabwean-works-of-art/?ref=hyperallergic.com) through a sting operation carried out by the FBI and CIA in Poland.

The Getty [**added another 5,400 high res art images**](http://blogs.getty.edu/iris/5400-images-from-getty-research-institutes-special-collections-now-available-as-open-content/?ref=hyperallergic.com) this week to its online Open Content Program, more than doubling the number of available images. The [**Friends of the High Line announced a new executive director**](http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/10/15/williamstown-artistic-director-to-lead-friends-of-the-high-line/?ref=hyperallergic.com): Jerry Gersten, who is leaving her position as artistic director of Williamstown Theater Festival.

Richard P. Townsend, former director of the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach (where [he resigned suddenly in 2011](http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/culturemonster/2011/01/latin-american-art-museum-.html?ref=hyperallergic.com)) and the Price Tower Arts Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, was named [**the new director of the Museum of Biblical Art** ](http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/10/14/new-director-for-museum-of-biblical-art/?smid=tw-share&ref=hyperallergic.com)in New York.

Dr. Marvin Bolt was named as[ **the Corning Museum of Glass’ first curator of science and technology**](http://www.cmog.org/press-release/corning-museum-glass-appoints-dr-marvin-bolt-its-first-curator-science-and-technology?ref=hyperallergic.com).

Brazilian street art brothers [**Os Gêmeos have joined Lehmann Maupin**](http://galleristny.com/2013/10/os-gemeos-and-sonia-gomes-to-lehmann-maupin/?ref=hyperallergic.com), where they will have their debut exhibition with the gallery in March of 2015.

New gallery Julie Meneret Contemporary Art[**will open November 6 on the Lower East Side**](http://www.juliemeneret.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), with its artist roster including Moroccan painter Zakaria Ramhani, French artist Frederic Nauczyciel, Korean artist Jin Joo Chae, and British conceptual photographer Jonny Briggs.

A giant brass fish sculpture in China that cost $11 million to build [**is causing some controversy for its extravagance**](http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/13/world/asia/as-china-vows-austerity-giant-brass-fish-devours-11-million.html?ref=hyperallergic.com), the *New York Times* reports.

David Adjaye, who designed the National Museum of African American History and Culture being built as a Smithsonian branch in Washington, DC, [**designed a furniture collection for Knoll inspired by the museum-in-progress**](http://www.wired.com/design/2013/10/washington-collection-chair/?ref=hyperallergic.com).

The [**Louis Armstrong House Museum celebrated its 10th anniversary**](http://bigstory.ap.org/article/louis-armstrong-house-marks-10-years-nyc-museum?ref=hyperallergic.com), and put on display the jazz musician’s life mask for the first time.

The [**original horse puppet of Joey from *War Horse* was acquired**](http://www.vam.ac.uk/b/blog/network/war-horse?ref=hyperallergic.com) by the Victoria & Albert Museum, where it goes on display today in a specially-made exhibition that shows how it moved on stage.

The [**National Palace Museum is loaning 231 Chinese artifacts to Japan**](http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2013/10/17/national/national-palace-museum-to-make-first-loan-of-chinese-artifacts-to-japan/?ref=hyperallergic.com#.UmBBFYles9E), including its prized jade cabbage, the first loan the museum has made to an Asian museum.

Next summer, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta[ **is opening a retrospective of work by Wynn Bullock**](http://resnicowschroeder.com/media.asp?id=3115&ref=hyperallergic.com), the first major museum show for the photographer in 40 years.
