Drawings attributed to [Alberto Giacometti](https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2017/aug/09/drawings-found-in-london-antiques-shop-confirmed-as-giacometti-works?ref=hyperallergic.com) were recovered from the collection of the late antiques dealer Eila Grahame. The sketches, which were made on both sides of a single sheet of paper, will be sold on October 12 at [Cheffins auction house](http://www.cheffins.co.uk/en/news/undiscovered-alberto-giacometti-drawings?ref=hyperallergic.com), with all proceeds donated to the Art Fund.

Pussy Riot members [Maria Alyokhina and Olga Borisova](https://www.theguardian.com/music/2017/aug/08/pussy-riot-oleg-sentsov-protest-yakutsk?ref=hyperallergic.com) were detained by Russian police after staging a protest in support of jailed Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov.

The [National Archives](https://www.archives.gov/research/jfk/2017-release?ref=hyperallergic.com) of the United States began to publish previously withheld documents from the JFK Assassination Records Collection. The [JFK Assassination Records Collection Act](https://www.archives.gov/research/jfk/processing-project?ref=hyperallergic.com) of 1992 states that the National Archives and Records Administration must publish any previously withheld records from the collection by October 26, 2017 — unless it is authorized for further withholding by the President of the United States.

[India](https://www.medianama.com/2017/08/223-india-blocks-access-internet-archive-wayback-machine/?ref=hyperallergic.com) appears to have blocked access to the [Internet Archive](https://archive.org/web/) (aka the Internet Wayback Machine).

The [National Trust](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/aug/05/national-trust-reverses-decision-on-gay-pride-badges?ref=hyperallergic.com) U-turned on its decision to bar volunteers who refused to wear rainbow gay pride badges to mark 50 years since the [decriminalization of homosexuality](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual%5FOffences%5FAct%5F1967?ref=hyperallergic.com) in the UK.

Members of [Norman Rockwell’s family](http://berkshireeagle.com/stories/letter-rockwell-family-urgesmuseum-to-keep-artwork,515752?ref=hyperallergic.com) denounced the Berkshire Museum’s plans to [deaccession](http://www.artsjournal.com/culturegrrl/2017/07/public-trust-bust-berkshire-museum-to-jettison-40-works-including-2-artist-donated-rockwells.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) works by the artist.

Marina Abramovic reconciled with her former collaborator and lover [Ulay](http://theartnewspaper.com/news/news/marina-abramovic-and-ulay/?ref=hyperallergic.com), following a talk at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. Ulay [sued](https://hyperallergic.com/253160/the-artist-is-pissed-ulay-sues-marina-abramovic/) Abramovic for contract violation in 2015, and was later [granted](https://hyperallergic.com/court-orders-marina-abramovic-to-pay-ulay-and-give-him-credit-for-their-art/) back-dated royalties and full accreditation for jointly created works by a Dutch court last year.

Art dealer [Archie Parker](https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2017/aug/08/rediscovered-joseph-wright-of-derby-self-portrait-goes-on-display?ref=hyperallergic.com) acquired a painting that he believes is a self-portrait of Joseph Wright of Derby. Parker made headlines in March after he purchased a painting [deaccessioned](https://hyperallergic.com/art-movements-195/) by the Huntington Library in San Marino, California. The work was later identified as the work of George Stubbs.

The New-York Historical Society will present [*The Vietnam War: 1945–1975*](http://www.nyhistory.org/press/releases/new-york-historical-society-present-unprecedented-exhibition-history-vietnam-war?ref=hyperallergic.com) — a “chronological and thematic narrative” of the conflict told with over 300 objects — in October.

Tristram Hunt, the director of the [Victoria & Albert Museum](https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2017/aug/06/v-and-a-chief-apologises-breastfeeding-woman-asked-to-cover-up-museum-tristram-hunt?ref=hyperallergic.com), tweeted an apology to a [visitor](https://twitter.com/vaguechera/status/893793544221143040?ref=hyperallergic.com) who was asked to cover up while breastfeeding.

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art will debut a new commission by [Julie Mehretu](https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/03/arts/design/julie-mehretu-san-francisco-museum-of-modern-art.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) on Labor Day weekend.

[*Vogue*](https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/09/arts/design/jennifer-lawrence-vogue-cover-john-currin-painting.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) commissioned Annie Leibovitz, Inez and Vinoodh, Bruce Weber, and John Currin to produce covers featuring Hollywood actor Jennifer Lawrence.

Christie’s will sell a number of works from the [Museum of Modern Art](http://www.artnews.com/2017/08/09/christies-to-sell-photographs-from-museum-of-modern-arts-collection/?ref=hyperallergic.com)‘s photography holdings next year. According to a museum spokesperson, the majority of the works are duplicates. The sales will go toward the department’s acquisition fund.

[Robert M. Rubin](http://www.lemonde.fr/idees/article/2017/07/29/jeff-koons-offre-a-la-france-des-fleurs-empoisonnees%5F5166379%5F3232.html?ref=hyperallergic.com), the former director of the Centre Pompidou, wrote an op-ed for *Le Monde* calling Jeff Koons’s sculpture for the city of Paris “a poisoned gift.”

The [National Portrait Gallery](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/08/04/national-gallery-dispute-neighbour-national-portrait-gallery/?ref=hyperallergic.com) filed a formal objection to the National Gallery’s expansion plans, arguing that the proposed addition would obscure the London skyline for its restaurant patrons.

Artist Pope.L (aka William Pope.L) launched a Kickstarter for [*Flint Water Project*](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/whatpipeline/popel-flint-water-at-what-pipeline?ref=hyperallergic.com), “an art installation, a performance and an intervention” that calls attention to Flint’s contaminated water crisis.

Thieves posing as city employees stole about a dozen works by the street artist [Invader](https://hyperallergic.com/vigilantes-posing-as-city-workers-steal-street-art-in-paris/) (real name Franck Slama) in Paris.

The [New York Public Library](https://ny.curbed.com/2017/8/8/16112032/new-york-public-library-rose-main-reading-room-landmark?ref=hyperallergic.com)‘s Rose Main Reading Room and Bill Blass Catalog Room acquired landmark status.

The [Metropolitan Museum of Art](http://www.metmuseum.org/blogs/digital-underground/2017/six-months-of-open-access-plus-google-bigquery?ref=hyperallergic.com)‘s online collection has seen a 17% traffic increase since the museum launched its open access initiative. The Met made over 375,000 images available under a Creative Commons Zero (CC0) license, 90% of which have been uploaded to [Wikimedia commons](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images%5Ffrom%5FMetropolitan%5FMuseum%5Fof%5FArt?ref=hyperallergic.com) so far.

The [George Eastman Museum](https://www.eastman.org/george-eastman-museum-launches-technicolor-online-research-archive?ref=hyperallergic.com) launched the [Technicolor Online Research Archive](http://technicolor.eastman.org/?ref=hyperallergic.com), a resource of over 40,000 documents from the Technicolor Motion Picture Corporation (1914–1955).

The [National Endowment for the Humanities](https://www.neh.gov/news/press-release/2017-08-03?ref=hyperallergic.com) announced a three-year partnership with the First Nations Development Institute. The Institute will match $2.1 million in funding from the NEH for 12 immersive Native-language programs a year.

The [Williams College Museum of Art](https://wcma.williams.edu/news-item/williams-college-museum-of-art-to-receive-landmark-gift-of-african-art-from-drs-carolyn-and-eli-newberger/?ref=hyperallergic.com) announced a promised gift of over 340 objects of African art from Drs. Carolyn and Eli Newberger.

The [Chocolate Factory](https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/07/arts/dance/chocolate-factory-theater-queens.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) acquired a new space at 38-29 24th Street in Long Island City, Queens. The $3.8 million purchase was administered by the New York City Economic Development Corporation.
