[Save Venice Inc.](https://savevenice.org/news/titian-assumption-of-the-virgin-2018/?ref=hyperallergic.com) announced a $500,000 restoration of Titian’s monumental altar painting the “[Assumption of the Virgin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assumption%5Fof%5Fthe%5FVirgin%5F%28Titian%29?ref=hyperallergic.com)” (1515–18) at the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. Standing at over 22 feet tall, it is the largest painting on wood panel in the world.

The [School of Visual Arts](https://hyperallergic.com/school-of-visual-arts-removes-teachers-improper-behavior/) removed two instructors — Roy Frumkes and Robert Haufrecht — following student complaints of inappropriate behavior.

The [Frieze art fair](https://www.artsy.net/news/artsy-editorial-frieze-will-offer-compensation-galleries-new-york-fair-internal-email-acknowledged-extreme-weather-conditions?ref=hyperallergic.com) will offer “some compensation” to galleries that exhibited at last week’s New York iteration of the fair, due to sweltering temperatures inside its newly configured tent.

The [anonymous buyer](https://www.mprnews.org/story/2018/05/07/sacred-pipe-tied-to-us-dakota-war-sold-for-nearly-40000-dollars?ref=hyperallergic.com) of a sacred pipe linked to the [Dakota War of 1862](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dakota%5FWar%5Fof%5F1862?ref=hyperallergic.com) returned it to the Prairie Island Nation. The Mdewakanton Dakota Chief White Dog, one of the 38 Dakota men hung in the [largest mass execution in US history](http://usdakotawar.org/history/aftermath/trials-hanging?ref=hyperallergic.com), gave the catlinite pipe to one of his captors. The Lower Sioux Indian Community unsuccessfully petitioned the auction company Skinner Inc. to halt the sale last week.

The [Frida Kahlo Corporation](https://hyperallergic.com/barbie-lawsuit-frida-kahlo-licensing-company-artists-relative/) (FKC), the Panama City-based organization that licenses Frida Kahlo’s name and image, filed a lawsuit against Mara Cristina Romeo Pinedo, the artist’s great-niece. The lawsuit accuses Pinedo — who recently succeeded in obtaining a temporary injunction against the sale of a new [Frida Kahlo Barbie](https://hyperallergic.com/toymaker-omits-frida-kahlos-iconic-unibrow-new-barbie-doll/) — of allegedly attempting to discredit the FKC and usurp its licensing role.

An [online petition](https://www.change.org/p/ministero-dei-beni-e-delle-attivit%C3%A0-culturali-e-del-turismo-immediate-reinstatement-of-anna-coliva-as-director-of-the-galleria-borghese?ref=hyperallergic.com) calling for the reinstatement of [Anna Coliva](https://www.theartnewspaper.com/news/top-italian-museum-director-faces-trial-over-gym-visits?ref=hyperallergic.com) as director of the Borghese Gallery amassed over 1,750 signatures. Coliva was suspended for six months without pay following an anonymous accusation of absenteeism.

[Ezra Chowaiki](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/04/arts/design/art-dealer-pleads-guilty-fraud-case.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) pled guilty to one count of wire fraud. The Manhattan-based art dealer was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, one count of wire fraud, and one count of interstate transportation of stolen goods. Sentencing is scheduled for September 12.

[Sotheby’s](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/03/arts/basquiat-auction-sothebys-neumann.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) will go ahead with the planned sale of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s 1982–83 painting “[Flesh and Spirit](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/03/arts/basquiat-auction-sothebys-neumann.html?ref=hyperallergic.com),” despite a lawsuit filed by collector Hubert Neumann. Neumann has alleged that the auction house violated an agreement to seek his approval on “all matters relating to cataloging, placement, and exhibiting each and every work consigned,” by entering into a separate agreement with one of his three daughters, Belinda. Mr Neumann is currently disputing a will executed by his late wife, Dolores Ormandy Neumann, which disinherited him in favor of his daughter. In a statement, Sotheby’s told Hyperallergic that “while Mr. Neumann’s motion is still pending before a panel of the Appellate Court, we remain confident that the panel will confirm the decisions by the other Justices and are looking forward to a successful auction on May 16.”

The nonprofit Authentication in Art and the Netherlands Arbitration Institute (NAI) will launch the [Court of Arbitration for Art](https://www.theartnewspaper.com/news/new-tribunal-aims-to-provide-expertise-and-impartiality-for-art-disputes?ref=hyperallergic.com) at the Hague on June 7\. The new tribunal is exclusively dedicated to resolving art disputes.

Over 100 artists signed a petition calling on the UK government to reverse to decision to exclude the arts and creative subjects from the new [English baccalaureate](https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2018/may/08/british-artists-ebacc-will-damage-creativity-and-self-expression?ref=hyperallergic.com).

The [Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University](http://www.lacma.org/sites/default/files/ASU%20LACMA%20Partnership%20Press%20Release-5-7-18-final%5B7%5D%5F0.pdf?ref=hyperallergic.com) partnered to establish a program dedicated to improving diversity in the museum field.

[Forgotten Heritage](https://hyperallergic.com/forgotten-heritage-database-highlights-overlooked-european-avant-garde-artists/), an interactive database highlighting the work of overlooked European avant-garde artists active after 1945, was launched online.

[Historic England](https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2018/may/10/bristol-business-park-among-postmodern-gems-granted-listed-status?ref=hyperallergic.com) announced listing status for 17 postmodern buildings, including units at the Aztec West business park in Bristol and the McKay trading estate in Slough.

[Georg Baselitz](http://artdaily.com/news/104478/Georg-Baselitz-to-be-first-living-artist-to-have-major-show-at-Accademia-in-Venice?ref=hyperallergic.com#.WvRzQtOUvUI) will become the first living artist to have an exhibition at the Gallerie dell’ Accademia in Venice next year.

The [Palais de Tokyo](https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/news/paris-museum-nudists-france-naturists-naked-palais-de-tokyo-a8338876.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) became the first museum in Paris to hold a tour for nudists.

The first of two blockbuster sales dedicated to the collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller brought in $646.1 million at [Christie’s](https://hyperallergic.com/christies-rockefeller-sale-picasso-monet-matisse/) on May 8\. The sale saw new auction records for works by Henri Matisse and Claude Monet.

Man Ray’s 1938 poster for the London Underground, “– Keeps London Going,” was sold at [Swann Auction Galleries](https://catalogue.swanngalleries.com/asp/fullCatalogue.asp?salelot=2476++++++76+&refno=++745515&saletype=&ref=hyperallergic.com) for $149,000, a record for the work.

The [National Portrait Gallery](https://www.npg.org.uk/about/press/news-release-garfield-weston-foundation?ref=hyperallergic.com) in London received £5 million (\~$6.8 million) in funding towards the creation of a new wing from the Garfield Weston Foundation.

The [World Monuments Fund](https://www.wmf.org/press-release/more-1-million-awarded-mexicos-earthquake-struck-monte-alb%C3%A1n?ref=hyperallergic.com) designated over $1 million in funding to support disaster response and restoration efforts at the [Monte Albán](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monte%5FAlb%C3%A1n?ref=hyperallergic.com) Archaeological Site in Oaxaca, Mexico.

The [National Endowment for the Arts](https://www.arts.gov/news/2018/national-endowment-arts-announces-grants-support-arts-and-innovation-across-country?ref=hyperallergic.com) announced its second round of funding for FY 2018.

The [Art Museum of Southeast Texas](http://www.amset.org/page-1831834?ref=hyperallergic.com) acquired artworks from collectors John Gaston Fairey and James Kralik. Fairey’s gift comprises over 500 pieces of Mexican folk art, including masks, ceramics, textiles, and trees of life. James Kralik donated 16 works by Texas artists Michael Bise, Lucas Johnson, and Mary McCleary.
