A Detroit judge has denied creditors’ request for an invasive re-appraisal of the Detroit Institute of Arts collection, telling them to “[**buy a ticket and take a tour instead**](http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20140515/METRO01/305150083?ref=hyperallergic.com#ixzz31ozjvi7T),” the *Detroit News* reported. The proposed action would have seen some art temporarily removed from the museum’s walls. The state of Florida’s legislature[**has approved a $43.3 million for the 2014–15 budget for all arts and culture**](http://arts.heraldtribune.com/2014-05-10/featured/florida-near-top-states-arts-culture-funding-new-budget/?ref=hyperallergic.com), a 384% increase over the current budget, bringing the state from 41st to 5th place in nationwide arts funding levels.

Tate Modern has [**unveiled a restored “Black on Maroon” (1958)**](http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2014/may/13/tate-modern-unveils-restored-mark-rothko-black-on-maroon?ref=hyperallergic.com), the Mark Rothko painting that was notoriously vandalized in 2012\. The man responsible for the vandalism [published a pseudo-apology](http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/may/15/vandalising-rothko-yellowism-black-on-maroon-tate-modern?ref=hyperallergic.com) in the *Guardian*. Richard Mosse[ **has won the 2014 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize**](http://lightbox.time.com/2014/05/12/richard-mosse-wins-2014-deutsche-borse-photography-prize/?ref=hyperallergic.com#ixzz31pk8QoD7) for *The* *Enclave*, a series of photographs shot in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and shown last year at the Irish pavilion at the Venice Biennale. The Smithsonian American Art Museum’s digitized collection [**“will be opened to software developers to make educational apps and tools,”**](http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2014/05/09/continued-progress-and-plans-open-government-data-0?ref=hyperallergic.com) the White House announced, as part of an “Open Government Data” initiative.

The Whitney Museum [**has donated a structure designed by LOT-EK to the Socrates Sculpture Park**](http://whitney.org/file%5Fcolumns/0005/8250/whitney%5Fsocratessculpturepark.pdf?ref=hyperallergic.com). The two-year-old “freestanding education studio” will be moved by crane later this month from its present location in the Whitney’s Sculpture Court to Socrates in Long Island City.

[**Zoe Leonard has received the Whitney Museum’s Bucksbaum Award**](http://artforum.com/archive/id=46804?ref=hyperallergic.com), a prize given to an artist showing at the Biennial. Leonard presented “[945 Madison Avenue](http://whitney.org/Exhibitions/2014Biennial/ZoeLeonard?ref=hyperallergic.com)” (2014) a *camera obscura* installed on the museum’s fourth floor.

Los Angeles architect Zoltan Pali [**has been ousted from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ museum project**](http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/academy-museum-architect-exits-tension-702506?ref=hyperallergic.com) over tensions with Renzo Piano, the *Hollywood Reporter* reported.

Researchers from the University of Buckingham in England [**discovered that the area surrounding Stonehenge was inhabited for thousands of years**](http://www.buckingham.ac.uk/contact-us/information-for-the-media/press-releases/stonehenge-dig-latest-findings/?ref=hyperallergic.com)before the rock circle was built, a finding that “blows the lid off the Neolithic Revolution in a number of ways.”

The Cleveland Museum of Art[**says it has debunked the Cambodian government’s claim**](http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2014/05/the%5Fcleveland%5Fmuseum%5Fof%5Fart%5Fsa.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) that a 10th-century statue of Hanuman held in its collection was looted during the Khmer Rouge revolution in the 1970s, the *Cleveland Plain Dealer* reported.

Parsons[**may take over and rename the New School**](http://nypost.com/2014/05/12/the-new-school-may-be-renamed-parsons/?ref=hyperallergic.com), the *New York Post* reported.

The president of the Picasso Museum in Paris, Anne Baldassari,[**has been fired over delays in reopening the museum**](http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/14/arts/design/president-of-picasso-museum-dismissed-over-delays.html?%5Fr=0&ref=hyperallergic.com), which has been closed for five years, the *New York Times* reported.

Katy Kline, formerly of the Williams College Museum of Art, [**has been appointed interim executive director of the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum**](http://www.decordova.org/about/press/decordova-announces-katy-kline-interim-executive-director?ref=hyperallergic.com) in Massachusetts.

Yilmaz Dziewior [**has been appointed director of Cologne’s Museum Ludwig**](http://news.artnet.com/in-brief/yilmaz-dziewior-to-head-colognes-museum-ludwig-18775?ref=hyperallergic.com), Artnet News reported.

[**NPR has named a new CEO**](http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/npr-taps-jarl-mohn-as-new-ceo/2014/05/09/37382d9c-d78c-11e3-95d3-3bcd77cd4e11%5Fstory.html?ref=hyperallergic.com): Jarl Mohn, who founded the E! Entertainment Television cable channel, among other achievements, the *Washington Post* reports.

Swiss special-effects artist H.R. Giger, best known for his work on Ridley Scott’s *Alien*, [**passed away.**](http://bigstory.ap.org/article/alien-artist-hr-giger-dies-74?ref=hyperallergic.com)
