A chunk of concrete weighing around 176 pounds [fell off](http://www.fastcodesign.com/3040412/fast-feed/176-pound-chunk-of-concrete-falls-off-new-zaha-hadid-building?ref=hyperallergic.com) a building designed by Zaha Hadid. It is the second such accident to occur at the Library and Learning Center at the Vienna University of Economics and Business.

The British Library [launched](http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-30781320?ref=hyperallergic.com) a campaign to raise £40 million (\~$60.6 million) for the digitization of its sound archive. A selection of some of the UK’s most precious recordings can be heard in Will Prentice’s recent contribution to the [*Guardian*](http://www.theguardian.com/profile/will-prentice?ref=hyperallergic.com).

According to the *New York Times*, the Museum of Modern Art is [deaccessioning](http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/01/13/moma-to-sell-a-monet-in-london/?%5Fr=1&ref=hyperallergic.com) Monet’s “Les Peupliers à Giverny” (1887) in order to “benefit \[its\] acquisition fund.” The painting will be sold at the Sotheby’s upcoming Impressionist and modern art sale in London.

The “second” Mona Lisa has [gone on tour](http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/news/earlier-mona-lisa-goes-on-tour-in-asia-as-owners-try-to-prove-it-is-a-real-leonardo-da-vinci-9979254.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) in Asia. The Mona Lisa Foundation claims that the painting was produced ten years before the Louvre’s version. According to Oxford University professor Martin Kemp, the painting has not been authenticated by any major Leonardo da Vinci scholars.

The Dulwich Picture Gallery [commissioned](http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-30793406?ref=hyperallergic.com) a Chinese studio to forge a painting from its collection. The forgery will be hung among the 180 works on display at the gallery. The identity of the painting will remain secret until April. The project, which was devised by conceptual artist Doug Fishbone, is entitled *Made in China*.

Lancelot William Thwaytes [lost](http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-30849535?ref=hyperallergic.com) his lawsuit against Sotheby’s. Thwaytes sold “the Cardsharps” after the auction house concluded it was a copy made after Caravaggio. The work’s new owner, Sir Denis Mahon, subsequently declared that the painting was produced by the Italian master, valuing the work at £10 million (\~$15.1 million).

Nestlé [filed](http://artfcity.com/2015/01/13/nestle-claims-trademark-infringement-against-artist-anthony-antonellis/?ref=hyperallergic.com) a trademark infringement claim against artist Anthony Antonellis. According to Art F City, the claim largely focuses on the content of [polandspringbornbetter.com](http://www.polandspringbornbetter.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com). The site, the domain of which was freely purchased by the artist, features an art project incorporating Poland Spring bottled water (which Nestlé owns) and colorful wristbands.

Architect Jean Nouvel [boycotted](http://www.dezeen.com/2015/01/14/jean-nouvel-boycotts-opening-of-philharmonie-de-paris-concert-hall/?ref=hyperallergic.com) the opening of the Philharmonie de Paris. Designed by Nouvel, the building has been mired in controversy due to a litany of construction delays and budget increases.

The York Museums Trust [added](http://artdaily.com/index.asp?int%5Fsec=11&int%5Fnew=75739&ref=hyperallergic.com#.VLgUHKtDsyB) over 160,000 objects to its [online database](http://www.yorkmuseumstrust.org.uk/collections/?ref=hyperallergic.com).

Jacksonville’s City Council [passed](http://jacksonville.com/news/2015-01-14/story/art-unoccupied-structures-bill-passes-city-council?ref=hyperallergic.com) a bill allowing artists to produce work on “unoccupied structures” such as park benches, traffic light boxes, and bicycle racks.

The former Los Angeles home of author Ray Bradbury is being [demolished](http://www.latimes.com/books/jacketcopy/la-et-jc-ray-bradbury-house-being-torn-down-20150113-story.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) by its new owner. The house was purchased for $1.765 million last June.

The Minnesota Vikings plan to [purchase](http://www.mprnews.org/story/2015/01/14/vikings-local-art?ref=hyperallergic.com) around 100 works of art for their new stadium. Artists who would like to have their work considered should email a selection of images and a short bio to art@newminnesotastadium.com

A petition to [prevent](http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20150112/long-island-city/petition-looks-stop-developer-from-trademarking-5pointz-name?ref=hyperallergic.com) G&M Realty from trademarking the name “5Pointz” currently has over 2,200 signatures. The former “graffiti mecca” was whitewashed by the building’s owners in November 2013\. The structure is currently being demolished to make way for two luxury apartment towers.

## Transactions

The Museo del Prado [bought](http://news.artnet.com/in-brief/museo-del-prado-purchases-rare-renaissance-triptych-worth-eur4m-220366?ref=hyperallergic.com) the Zarzoso triptych for €4 million (\~$4.6 million).

The North Carolina Museum of Art [acquired](http://www.artfixdaily.com/artwire/release/6544-north-carolina-museum-of-art-receives-major-gift-of-works-of-art-?ref=hyperallergic.com) 81 works from the collection of Jim and Mary Patton. The gift includes a further 17 works which will be formally acquired at a later date.

## Transitions

Diane Rodriquez has been [chosen](http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/arts/culture/la-et-cm-obama-diane-rodriguez-arts-20150112-story.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) by US President Barack Obama to join the National Council on the Arts.

The Museum of Fine Arts Houston [unveiled](http://m.chron.com/entertainment/arts-theater/article/Museum-of-Fine-Arts-Houston-unveils-dramatic-6011568.php?ref=hyperallergic.com) a $450 million redevelopment plan.

Karen Rosenberg left the *New York Times* to [become](http://observer.com/2015/01/artspace-poaches-karen-rosenberg-from-the-times-to-be-deputy-editor/?ref=hyperallergic.com) the deputy editor of Artspace magazine. The art sales start-up was acquired by the publishing house Phaidon last year.

The Lombard Freid Gallery will [close](http://news.artnet.com/art-world/lombard-freid-gallery-to-close-after-two-decades-220800?ref=hyperallergic.com) within the next few months. According to artnet News, the closure is due to a disagreement between the gallery’s owners, Lea Freid and Jane Lombard.

Mitchell Algus is [opening](http://www.artnews.com/2015/01/14/mitchell-algus-of-algus-greenspon-to-open-mitchell-algus-gallery/?ref=hyperallergic.com) a new space on 132 Delancey Street.

Harold Hozer, the Metropolitan Museum’s senior vice president for public affairs, is [stepping down](http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/01/13/a-stalwart-at-the-metropolitan-museum-of-art-to-step-down/?%5Fr=0&ref=hyperallergic.com) after almost 23 years at the museum. Holzer is [also](http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/book-review-lincoln-and-the-power-of-the-press-by-harold-holzer/2014/10/17/8faf03f4-48cc-11e4-b72e-d60a9229cc10%5Fstory.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) one of the world’s leading Abraham Lincoln scholars.

## Crime

Joseph Gibbons, a filmmaker and former MIT professor, was [charged](http://nypost.com/2015/01/10/bank-robber-appears-to-be-screwball-former-professor/?ref=hyperallergic.com) with robbing a bank in New York’s Chinatown. A cell-mate of Gibbons told the *New York Post* that Gibbons filmed his alleged robbery as part of an art project.

A 17th-century statuette stolen from the Decorative Arts Museum in Paris was [recovered](http://www.lefigaro.fr/arts-expositions/2015/01/11/03015-20150111ARTFIG00144-musee-des-arts-decoratifs-une-statuette-volee-et-retrouvee-dans-les-toilettes.php?ref=hyperallergic.com) in one of the museum’s restrooms. It’s thought that the thief balked shortly after detaching the sculpture from its base.

The Robert Indiana sculpture “Seven” — a large numeral made of steel that has been outside the Portland Museum of Art in Maine since last fall — was [tagged](http://www.pressherald.com/2015/01/16/a-mark-on-public-art-portland-museum-of-arts-seven-tagged/?ref=hyperallergic.com) by vandals. The tag, according to the *Portland Press Herald*, read: “(Expletive) art.”

## Accolades

Artists Xu Bing, Mark Bradford, Sam Gilliam, Maya Lin, Julie Mehretu, Pedro Reyes, and Kehinde Wiley will [receive](http://artforum.com/news/id=49780?ref=hyperallergic.com) the US State Department Medal of Arts.

The Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta [received](http://artsculture.blog.ajc.com/2015/01/13/woodruff-arts-center-receives-6-6-million-grant-to-expand-education-programs/?ref=hyperallergic.com#%5F%5Ffederated=1) a $6.6 million grant from the Lettie Pate Evans Foundation to develop its education programs.
