# Learning the Art of the Condolence Letter

This weekend, Green-Wood Cemetery will host “[The Art of the Condolence Letter](https://www.green-wood.com/event/the-art-of-the-condolence-letter/?ref=hyperallergic.com),” a lesson on crafting letters of condolence. The hour and a half seminar, led by death educator Amy Cunningham, looks at condolence letters of the past, written by figures such as Thomas Jefferson, Emily Dickinson, Queen Victoria, Marcel Proust, and Ernest Hemingway. Cunningham examines a time “when death was ever present” and condolence letters “were mainstays of life.” Cunningham will lead a guide to crafting these letters, meant to help people grieve and heal.

Green-Wood Cemetery, a National Historic Landmark, was founded in 1838 and became one of the first rural cemeteries in the country. Located in Brooklyn, the cemetery hosts a number of tours and events year-round.
