# Artists Commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Riots at the New Museum

On Thursday night, the [New Museum](https://www.newmuseum.org/calendar/view/1426/speculative-monuments-show-and-pray-tell-with-motha-s-commissioned-artists?ref=hyperallergic.com) teams up with the Museum of Transgender Hirstory & Art (MOTHA), bringing together a select group of artists to propose new monuments to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall riots. Participating artists commissioned by MOTHA include Chris E. Vargas, Chris Bogia, Devin N. Morris, and D’hana Perry.

The event takes place during the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, and each proposal argues for “how to understand and situate this *hir*story in our contemporary moment.” This program also coincides with Chris E. Vargas’s exhibition *Conscious Razing: The Stonewall Re-memorialization Project* at the New Museum. The exhibition explores Stonewall “as a geographically, demographically, and historically contested site.”
