Washington Boulevard, Arlington Heights, Los Angeles) Alongside the highly visible trend of blue-chip mega-galleries cropping up throughout Los Angeles, there is also a wave of artist-run, nonprofit, and independent exhibition spaces that are redefining the city’s artistic landscape. To explore this phenomenon, the Otis Public Practice MFA program will be hosting an [Alternative Arts Spaces Panel](https://www.facebook.com/events/1208439075889082/), with representatives from [3307](http://3307wwashingtonblvd.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Little House Gallery](http://www.littlehousegallery.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Selecto Planta Baja](http://www.selectoplantabaja.net/?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Slanguage](http://slanguagestudio.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), and [the Underground Museum](http://theunderground-museum.org/?ref=hyperallergic.com), as well as Carol Cheh who has written several articles on the topic. Hill St., Suite 104-8, Chinatown, Los Angeles) The [Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA)](http://www.lacarchive.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com) was founded as an archive of contemporary arts-related media, publications, and ephemera. In recognition of its accreditation as a nonprofit, and its move to a new location, LACA will be throwing a [grand opening celebration](https://www.facebook.com/events/601701906683178/) this Thursday. Dozens of artists are also participating in a [benefit auction](http://www.lacarchive.com/auction/index.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) for the organization. Grand Avenue, Downtown, Los Angeles) In 1989, the first [Day Without Art](https://www.visualaids.org/projects/detail/day-without-art?ref=hyperallergic.com) was held in recognition of the devastating effect that the AIDS crisis has had on the arts community. This year, MOCA will be screening [Compulsive Practice](http://www.moca.org/program/day-without-art-compulsive-practice?ref=hyperallergic.com), an hour-long program of films by nine artists whose work confronts and reflects the way that they are affected by HIV/AIDS. Participating filmmakers include James Wentzy, Carol Leigh aka Scarlot Harlot, Juanita Mohammed, Justin B. The [closing party for her show, *Militant Friction*](https://www.facebook.com/events/461865477317317/), will feature a screening of Clyde Petersen’s animated film [*Torrey Pines*](https://www.torreypinesfilm.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), a queer, punk coming-of-age tale set in Southern California.
