The relationship between Berea College and Lincoln Institute is marked by racism, “benevolent” White donors, and Black educators who equipped Black youth with skills in industrial trades.

N.E. Brown
N.E. Brown was born and raised near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Brown pursued a BFA in painting and drawing at Tyler School of Art, then earned an MFA in painting and drawing at the University of Iowa. Currently, Brown’s work uses painting/drawing, pyrography, and woodworking to map the intersections between personal memory, national history, and racial identity.
