# Get Your Brief History of Chicano Studies in This Series of Workshops

Slated to open next year, the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art, Culture & Industry of the Riverside Art Museum — or “[The Cheech](https://thecheechcenter.org/?ref=hyperallergic.com)” for short — will explore the breadth of Chicano culture, from pre-Columbian era works to contemporary art, built around the actor’s collection. Featuring over 700 works by artists including Carlos Almaraz, Chaz Bojórquez, Gronk, Frank Romero, Patssi Valdez, Jaime “*Germs*” Zacarias, and many more, it is considered one of the nation’s finest collections of Chicano art.

In anticipation of the Cheech’s opening, the Riverside Art Museum will host [Community Chicano Studies](http://www.riversideartmuseum.org/education/adult/community-chicano-studies/?ref=hyperallergic.com), a series of three workshops beginning this week. Led by Dr. Irene Sanchez, a Chicana educator, poet, and writer, each event will combine a Chicano history lesson with a participatory activity. This Thursday’s talk, titled “Understanding the Ancestors,” will focus on the impact of the Indigenous past on Chicano culture, and will be followed by a hands-on mural project incorporating Indigenous influences. Upcoming sessions will explore the “fantasy heritage” of the Southwest and the Chicano Rights Movement of the 1960s.
