[Cinelimite](https://www.cinelimite.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), a nonprofit dedicated to making Brazilian cinema available in the US, has put together a first-of-its-kind online retrospective of movies from [Espírito Santo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esp%C3%ADrito%5FSanto?ref=hyperallergic.com), a coastal state in southeastern Brazil. The nine films in [*The World Seen and Dreamt*](https://www.cinelimite.com/programs/the-world-seen-and-dreamt-a-collection-of-films-from-espirito-santo?ref=hyperallergic.com) represent the successes of various acts of documentation and preservation. For instance, [*Cenas de Família*](https://www.cinelimite.com/post/cenas-de-familia-1926-29?ref=hyperallergic.com) ("Family Scenes") was shot in Espírito Santo from 1926 to 1929 by groundbreaking Brazilian filmmaker Ludovico Persici. However, his footage was not discovered until the 21st century, whereupon it was turned into a finished film. It represents an invaluable historical document.

The other works similarly capture aspects of life in Espírito Santo, such as 1978's [*Canto Para A Liberdade - A Festo do Ticumbi*](https://www.cinelimite.com/post/canto-para-a-liberdade-a-festo-do-ticumbi-1978?ref=hyperallergic.com), which follows Afro-Brazilians practicing the local celebrations of Ticumbi, or 1975's [*Tutti Tutti Buona Gente, Propriamente Buona*](https://www.cinelimite.com/post/tutti-tutti-buona-gente-propriamente-buona-1975?ref=hyperallergic.com), about Italian immigrants in the region.

All titles in the program are free to stream for the duration of the retrospective.
