# Closing Out a Month of Black Art in the Heart of Brooklyn

Black History Month is drawing to a close, but there’s still time to honor it with art. [Black Artstory Month ](http://myrtleavenue.org/blackartstory/?ref=hyperallergic.com)is a project of the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership that brings exhibitions, murals, performances, film screenings, and more to some 13 blocks of Myrtle Avenue, stretching through parts of Brooklyn’s Fort Greene and Clinton Hill neighborhoods. The theme for this year’s event — the fifth annual Black Artstory — is “The Altar: Rituals of Healing in the African Diaspora,” which means the featured work is focused on ideas of restoration and realignment.

The physical anchor of the project is the [art walk](http://myrtleavenue.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/BAM2017-ARTWALK-WEB.jpg?ref=hyperallergic.com): a series of murals painted on windows and exhibitions installed in shops and restaurants along Myrtle. Jose-Aurelio Baez, Tania Laure, and Steve Mosley are among the 2017 artists, and you can pull up or print out [the map](http://myrtleavenue.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/BAM2017-ARTWALK-WEB.jpg?ref=hyperallergic.com) to guide your visit anytime. The static artworks are supplemented by a series of free Friday night performances, which so far have included a [night](http://presentfutures.info/pfhealing/?ref=hyperallergic.com) devoted to imagining the future as a form of resistance and the premiere of a film by Taja Lindley about recycling both discarded material and negative energy. Black Artstory’s [closing event](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/black-artstory-2017-the-altar-rituals-of-healing-in-the-african-diaspora-tickets-31069905925?ref=hyperallergic.com), co-hosted by [Museum Hue](https://hyperallergic.com/the-group-working-behind-the-scenes-to-diversify-museum-staffs/), will take place this Friday, February 24\. Titled “A Seat at the Table,” it promises to be festive and participatory, with a pop-up art show, dance and movement arts workshops, a community playlist, and more. What better way to close out the month and gear up for the coming ones than with a celebration of black art and excellence?
