Other than having a name that sounds like it could be a gay bar in a seedy part of town, Sydney’s Cockatoo Island is going to be hosting the [largest urban art festival in the southern hemisphere](http://sydney-central.whereilive.com.au/news/story/if-beastman-can-you-can/?ref=hyperallergic.com) starting November 4 and continuing until to December 11.

New Zealand’s [Times Live](http://www.timeslive.co.za/entertainment/celebrity/2011/10/13/banksy-work-to-feature-at-biggest-street-art-festival-in-southern-hemisphere?ref=hyperallergic.com) writes:

> **…** the highlight of the \[Outpost Project\] festival will be the *Oi You! Collection* — an exhibition of more than 70 rare and original street art works by world famous street artists such as Bansky, Faile, Micallef, Swoon and Os Gemeos.

The Outpost [site](http://outpost.cockatooisland.gov.au/about-outpost-project.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) declares that 150+ local and global artists will take part in this unique artistic festival that is sure to bring a new jolt of energy to Australia’s largest city and, judging by the [website URL](http://outpost.cockatooisland.gov.au/?ref=hyperallergic.com), all under the auspices of the Australian government.

According to [Wikipedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockatoo%5FIsland%5F%28New%5FSouth%5FWales%29?ref=hyperallergic.com):

> Cockatoo Island is a former imperial prison, industrial school, reformatory and gaol. It was also the site of one of Australia’s biggest shipyards during the twentieth century. The first of its two dry docks was built by convicts and was completed in 1857\. The island’s maritime industrial activity ceased in 1992\. Cockatoo Island was inscribed on the World Heritage List in July 2010.
