The exhibition [*Found in Translation: Design in California and Mexico, 1915–1985*](http://www.lacma.org/art/exhibition/found-in-translation?ref=hyperallergic.com) at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) illustrates how stylistic design trends flowed both north and south, where they were reinterpreted and reshaped into hybrid cultural forms. In conjunction with the exhibition, LACMA will be hosting a [day-long symposium on the contemporary craft](http://www.lacma.org/event/craft-california-mexico?ref=hyperallergic.com) of both locales.

In the morning, designers [Sami Hayek](https://www.hayekstudio.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Christina Kim](https://www.dosainc.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Marisol Centeno](http://www.biyuu.mx/?ref=hyperallergic.com), and [Laura Noriega](http://www.lauranoriega.net/?ref=hyperallergic.com) will discuss their collaborations with indigenous artisans in Oaxaca and Jalisco. In the afternoon, artists [Gerardo Monterrubio](http://www.gerardomonterrubio.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Consuelo Jimenez Underwood](http://www.consuelojunderwood.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), and [Tanya Aguiñiga](http://www.tanyaaguiniga.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com) will talk about how their work explores issues of gender, politics, and identity through the incorporation of craft techniques and materials — Monterrubio through ceramics, and Aguiñiga and Jimenez Underwood through fiber art. Following the symposium, there will be a closing reception at the Craft in America Center for [*Mano-Made*](http://www.craftinamerica.org/exhibits/mano-made-new-expression-in-craft-by-latino-artists-3/?ref=hyperallergic.com), a series of three solo shows culminating with Jimenez Underwood’s large-scale textile depiction of a geographical border, which wraps around the Center itself.
