# Database Launches to Track Artifact Looting in Egypt

There have been many reports about damage to Egypt’s art treasures, but reports are conflicting at best, which may be because the facts are being caught up in the spin of the Egyptian government’s propaganda campaign to represent themselves as the group capable of maintaining the safety of the public … and the treasures of Egypt.

Recently a new site has emerged to document the reports of damage on the archeological sites of Egypt. It is a helpful site with links to many places.

Regarding the National Museum, there are many facts list but notably:

- The cartonnage from Tuya’s mummy lies on the floor and there was concern for her mummy. However, it is believe that the cartonnage was displayed separately to her mummy, and the case appears to be unopened.

Regarding the Memphis Museum:

- This has reportedly been looted but there are few details, but the impression is that it has been very badly hit. However, [Dr Hawass said on 1st February that all 28 musuems are safe](http://www.drhawass.com/blog/state-egyptian-antiquities-today-update?ref=hyperallergic.com).

- [possibly 3,000 objects looted](http://egyptopaedia.com/2011/sinai?ref=hyperallergic.com) from antiquity storehouse in the Sinai; and
- on the Pyramid fields there are conflicting reports, including if the [tombs of Abusir have been opened](http://egyptopaedia.com/2011/pyramid-fields/abusir?ref=hyperallergic.com), the [situation at the Giza pyramids](http://egyptopaedia.com/2011/pyramid-fields/giza?ref=hyperallergic.com) is unknown, the [reports from Saqqara are conflicting](http://egyptopaedia.com/2011/pyramid-fields/saqqar?ref=hyperallergic.com), specifically those from Zahi Hawass, the head of antiquities in Egypt.
