# Front-Page NYT Report Confirms Gulf Labor Findings on Saadiyat Island

A [front-page investigative story published in the *New York Times*](http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/19/nyregion/workers-at-nyus-abu-dhabi-site-face-harsh-conditions.html?%5Fr=1&ref=hyperallergic.com) today has confirmed [previous allegations](https://hyperallergic.com/gulf-labor-monitoring-report-finds-ongoing-labor-violations-at-guggenheim-abu-dhabi/) of labor abuses in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), echoing the findings of the [*Guardian*](http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/dec/22/abu-dhabi-happiness-island-misery?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Human Rights Watch](http://www.hrw.org/features/saadiyat-island-happiness-revisited?ref=hyperallergic.com), and, most recently, the [Gulf Labor activist group](https://hyperallergic.com/gulf-labor-monitoring-report-finds-ongoing-labor-violations-at-guggenheim-abu-dhabi/). Though the piece focuses on the New York University (NYU) campus recently completed in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the article repeats many of the specific observations made by the Gulf Labor activist group’s on-the-ground [assessment](http://gulflabor.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/GL%5FReport%5FApr30.pdf?ref=hyperallergic.com) — [covered by Hyperallergic](http://gulflabor.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/GL%5FReport%5FApr30.pdf?ref=hyperallergic.com) earlier this month — of labor conditions on Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island, which is home to the Guggenheim, NYU, Louvre, and other Abu Dhabi franchises of Western cultural institutions. The *Times* [report](http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/19/nyregion/workers-at-nyus-abu-dhabi-site-face-harsh-conditions.html?%5Fr=1&ref=hyperallergic.com), penned by Ariel Kaminer and Sean O’Driscoll, finds evidence of passport withholding, debts incurred from recruitment fees, violent interrogations for alleged labor organizers, summary deportation, and wage deception. One worker, the article alleges, was promised

> a base pay of 1,500 dirham a month, or $408\. After he arrived, he said, he found out it would be 700 dirham, about what other Saadiyat Island construction workers have been reported to make.

The *Times’* coverage of the starchitecture-infused cultural development in the Gulf has been comprehensive, if uneven, with the front page playing host in recent years to incisive, [Pulitzer-finalist reported essays](http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/27/arts/design/27museums.html?pagewanted=all&ref=hyperallergic.com) and [embarrassing, stenographic puff](http://hyperallergic.com/76237/how-to-buy-your-way-to-the-front-page-of-the-ny-times/) alike. Today’s story links the issues on Saadiyat to the ongoing activism of Gulf Labor, which has been discussed extensively [in these pages](http://hyperallergic.com/tag/gulf-labor/) and elsewhere. (This includes the *Times* [itself](http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/20/arts/artsspecial/door-to-art-of-the-world-barely-ajar.html?ref=hyperallergic.com), both when Holland Cotter addressed the [February](https://hyperallergic.com/protest-action-erupts-inside-guggenheim-museum/) and [March](https://hyperallergic.com/protesters-rain-down-thousands-of-bills-in-guggenheim-rotunda/) protest actions at the Guggenheim, and earlier in 2011, [when the Grey Lady covered the original Gulf Labor boycott](http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/17/arts/design/guggenheim-threatened-with-boycott-over-abu-dhabi-project.html?ref=hyperallergic.com).)

The public relations effort against these allegations has also been [underway](https://hyperallergic.com/independent-monitor-releases-report-on-uae-museums-related-labor-conditions/) for some time; the latest findings contravene NYU’s elaborately demonstrated [“labor values.](http://nyuad.nyu.edu/en/about/statement-of-labor-values.html?ref=hyperallergic.com)” These values were cited in a [statement](http://nyulocal.com/on-campus/2014/05/19/workers-mistreated-at-nyu-abu-dhabis-newly-finished-campus/?ref=hyperallergic.com) made by the university to other media this afternoon, which called the *Times* allegations“troubling and unacceptable” if “true as reported.” The lengthy comment, which details the aforementioned values and reiterates NYU Abu Dhabi’s apparently high safety standards, ends in a hedged *mea culpa:*

> And to any worker who was not treated in line with the standards we set and whose circumstances went undetected and unremedied, we offer our apologies.

Absent significant reforms, the Guggenheim is likely in for a similar humiliation.
