Today we mourn the country singer, camp queen, hair icon, philanthropist of [wide-ranging](https://time.com/collections/time100-philanthropy-2025/7286075/dolly-parton/?ref=hyperallergic.com) generosities, and veritable Patron Saint of the South — particularly Appalachia and Tennessee, from which she proudly hailed and whose rich culture and people she loved deeply. In tribute to our dearest Dolly, who passed away yesterday at the age of 80, we're sharing an artwork from East Tennessee State University's 2020 [exhibition](https://www.etsu.edu/cas/art/galleries/archive/positive-negative/pn35dolly.php?ref=hyperallergic.com) dedicated to the musician. “Dolly was a proverbial ray of sunshine amidst an often dark world,” said artist Kym Day of her warm-hued portrait of the singer. “I depicted her gazing upward toward a future so bright she has to shade her eyes from its brilliance. They come for the arts first, so this is a bellwether for the rest of US society. But I wonder, has no one in Arts Admin not see this eventuality coming down the pike? I doubt Keith Haring had to pay even $1000/semester, his studio rent $150, and would never have made tuition in these times. Only the rich can avoid risk of a student loan anchor the rest of their lives. And as this entire economy for the top 10% is telling us, soon only they will only have open access to a future of one's own choosing. This is War on Humanity, prosecuted incrementally since the 80's, upon the bottom 90%.
