# #HyperPicks: A Cabaret for the Bees

Bees may not be in [quite as dire straits](http://www.slate.com/articles/health%5Fand%5Fscience/science/2016/07/colony%5Fcollapse%5Fdisorder%5Fis%5Fno%5Flonger%5Fthe%5Fexistential%5Fthreat%5Fto%5Fhoneybees.html?ref=hyperallergic.com) as many of us thought they were last year, but they still represent a vital part of our ecosystem, and a [threatened one](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/oct/01/bees-added-to-us-endangered-species-list-for-the-first-time?ref=hyperallergic.com). On view at [Pratt Manhattan Gallery](https://www.pratt.edu/events/exhibitions/pratt-manhattan-gallery/?ref=hyperallergic.com) through February 11, *Nectar: War Upon the Bees* is “a visual essay on the mortality of pollinators as a consequence of the faster-bigger-cheaper approach to food production that is steadily draining our planet’s resources, and that could ultimately provoke the collapse of our civilization,” [writes](https://www.pratt.edu/uploads/nectar.pdf?ref=hyperallergic.com) curator Berta Sichel in the catalogue. The group exhibition features a synthetic honeycomb structure by Luis Fernando Ramirez Celis, scent-infused sculptures by [Kelly Heaton](http://hyperallergic.com/246517/the-honeybee-as-artistic-messenger/), a seed library by [Ellie Irons](https://hyperallergic.com/an-ecologically-minded-artist-navigating-the-nature-culture-continuum/) and Anne Percoco, and more sustainable art. To close out the show this week, the gallery will host a Thursday night lecture by Dr. Rachael Winfree, who researches the ecology of pollinators, followed by an “eco-political cabaret” by performance group the Buzz that will include “spoken word, song, ritual and satire.”
