# LACMA Acquires Eight New Works, and Harvard Museums Receive 70 Otto Piene Sketchbooks

[**The Los Angeles Country Museum of Art (LACMA)**](https://www.lacma.org/sites/default/files/press/2019-04/2019-Collectors-Committee-Press-Release%5F4.14.19-FINAL%5F2.pdf?ref=hyperallergic.com) has acquired eight new works of art, announced during the Museum’s 33rd annual Collectors Committee fundraiser. The works include **Luchita Hurtado**’s crayon and ink drawing “Untitled” (c. 1951), which was a gift from **Janet Dreisen Rappaport** and **Herb Rappaport** through the 2019 Collectors Committe; **Charlotte Perriand**’s “Kitchen for an apartment in Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation” (1952), a gift of the 2019 Collector’s Committee; **Lisa Reihana**’s video installation “in Pursuit of Venus \[infected\],” jointly purchased by LACMA through the 2019 Collectors Committee and Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Foundation Purchase, and the **Phyllis C. Wattis** Fund for Major Acquisitions; **Luisa Roldán**’s wood sculpture “The Education of the Virgin” (early 1680s), a gift of the 2019 Collectors Committee with funds from **Linda Borick** and **Bill Davidson** on behalf of the **Louis L. Borick** Foundation; **Farideh Lashaï**’s “When I count, there are only you…, But when I look, there is only a shadow” (2012–13), a gift of the 2019 Collectors Committee; **Huma Bhabha**’s “God of Some Things” (2011), a gift of the 2019 Collectors Committee; five African American quilts, including **Mary Lou** **(“Mother”) Brown**’s “Hit and Miss” (1945), **Effie Jackson**’s “Double Strip (early 1940s), **Laverne Bracken**’s “Strip” (1992), **Sherry Byrd**’s “Roman Stripe Variations” (1989), and **Rosie Lee Tompkins**’s “Hit and Miss Strip” (1983), which were all gifts of the 2019 Collectors Committee; and **Anne Truitt**’s sculpture “White: Four” (1962), a gift of the 2019 Collectors Committee.

**The Harvard Museums** have received a gift of 70 sketchbooks by **Otto Piene**, from the poet and author **Elizabeth Goldring**, the artist’s wife. The sketchbooks date from 1935–2014 and are largely unpublished, and the next Stefan Engelhorn Curatorial Fellow in the **Busch-Reisinger Museum** (2019–21) will be appointed to study and catalogue the gift. Also included in the gift are a selection of pens that Piene used for his sketches. These will be held in the **Center for the Technical Study of Modern Art** (CTSMA) and will be used for the long-term preservation of the sketchbooks. \[via email announcement\]

[**Christie’s**](https://www.christies.com/hommage-a-serge-royaux-28319.aspx?lid=1&dt=170420190432&saletitle=&ref=hyperallergic.com) Hommage à Serge Royaux sale in Paris brought in a total of €672,688 (\~$760,000) on April 17\. The sale’s top lot, [a pair of vases of the style of **Louis XVI** mounted in a lamp](https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/furniture-lighting/paire-de-vases-de-style-louis-xvi-6197514-details.aspx?from=salesummery&intObjectID=6197514&sid=3dd5a87a-b4ce-4dc6-8142-1e581536c9dc&ref=hyperallergic.com) (China, Qing Dynasty), sold for €75,000 (\~$85,000).

[**Christie’s**](https://onlineonly.christies.com/s/feelings-colour-graphic-art-howard-hodgkin/lots/1616?lang=en-us&ref=hyperallergic.com) Feelings in Colour: The Graphic Art of Howard Hodgkin online sale brought in a total of £302,500 (\~$394,000) on April 4–12\. The sale’s top lot, **Howard Hodgkin**’s “[As Time Goes By (Red)](https://onlineonly.christies.com/s/feelings-colour-graphic-art-howard-hodgkin/howard-hodgkin-1932-2017-11/67630?ref=hyperallergic.com)” (2009), sold for £68,750 (\~$90,000).

[**Christie’s**](https://onlineonly.christies.com/s/first-open-online/lots/1549?lang=en-us&ref=hyperallergic.com) First Open online sale brought in a total of £1,970,000 (\~$2,568,000) on April 4–11\. The sale’s top lot, **George Condo**’s “[Untitled](https://onlineonly.christies.com/s/first-open-online/george-condo-b-1957-24/68215?ref=hyperallergic.com)” (1983), sold for £118,750 (\~$155,000).
