Swann Galleries’s [LGBTQ+ Art, Material Culture & History sale](https://bit.ly/3Q2pkmU?ref=hyperallergic.com) is at auction on Thursday, August 18\. In its fourth iteration and entering the fifth year, the sale continues to spotlight artists, creatives, and activists from the community.

Ephemera celebrating LGBTQ+ life and history, as well as material from the early years of the gay liberation movement in the United States through the current era, feature various zines and pamphlets; a [1971 guide to the gay bar scene](https://bit.ly/3BG1PM0?ref=hyperallergic.com) across North America; a rare placard reading “[Homosexuals are American Citizens Also](https://bit.ly/3P2kpkm?ref=hyperallergic.com)” from the 1969 Annual Reminder day in Philadelphia; a vernacular photograph circa the early 1950s of two men at the [Night Owl Bar](https://bit.ly/3d85po3?ref=hyperallergic.com); as well as posters promoting [Pride](https://bit.ly/3Q6jBfN?ref=hyperallergic.com) and [Gay Liberation](https://bit.ly/3P0Mf0k?ref=hyperallergic.com), [RuPaul](https://bit.ly/3zVIpl8?ref=hyperallergic.com) drag shows, and [AIDS awareness](https://bit.ly/3oVZkNX?ref=hyperallergic.com).

Among the fine art on offer are original works and prints by [Tom of Finland](https://bit.ly/3Q7V4ao?ref=hyperallergic.com), including [*Portrait of Eric* (1985)](https://bit.ly/3Q0dxp9?ref=hyperallergic.com) — which comes to auction accompanied by two autograph letters signed by Finland — and [Keith Haring](https://bit.ly/3BYEO7p?ref=hyperallergic.com) prints. Artists associated with or influenced by Tom of Finland include [Sadao Hasegawa](https://bit.ly/3d9MfhC?ref=hyperallergic.com), [George Quaintance](https://bit.ly/3oT3vds?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Rex](https://bit.ly/3vGijjs?ref=hyperallergic.com), and [Etienne](https://bit.ly/3byeVAo?ref=hyperallergic.com). Also available is a contemporary work by Andrew Lamar Hopkins; a run of oil works by [Hugh Steers](https://bit.ly/3d4raF9?ref=hyperallergic.com); and a section of photographs that includes important prints by [Peter Hujar](https://bit.ly/3d9gp4j?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Nan Goldin](https://bit.ly/3zYjIEv?ref=hyperallergic.com), [JEB](https://bit.ly/3OZ8yns?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Robert Mapplethorpe](https://bit.ly/3zYqJp1?ref=hyperallergic.com), and [Patricia Coffie](https://bit.ly/3SulBzW?ref=hyperallergic.com).

Literature highlights include Oscar Wilde’s [*The Picture of Dorian Gray* (1891)](https://bit.ly/3Q2r6V6?ref=hyperallergic.com) — one of 250 original copies signed by the author and re-bound in modern full red Morocco by Robert Wu in 2019 — and an [1893 autograph letter signed](https://bit.ly/3Sriadu?ref=hyperallergic.com) by the author offering a friend’s daughter a minor role in *Lady Windermere’s Fan*. Also available are a selection of gay and lesbian [pulp fiction novels](https://bit.ly/3vEQXdm?ref=hyperallergic.com) from the 1950s and 1960s, as well as titles by [Radclyffe Hall](https://bit.ly/3Q3dYim?ref=hyperallergic.com), [Magnus Hirschfeld](https://bit.ly/3QnTwsv?ref=hyperallergic.com), and [Tennessee Williams](https://bit.ly/3OYmuxJ?ref=hyperallergic.com) among others.
