# Celebrating Marginalized Voices at Long Beach Zine Fest, from Xicanistas to Queer POC Goths

Dating back to the photocopied and stapled underground periodicals of the 1960s and ’70s, zines have long offered an alternative to the mainstream press, providing an outlet for a diverse spectrum of underrepresented voices. And over the past decade or so, the popularity of zines has exploded, perhaps a [tangible, analog response](https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/28/magazine/why-the-internet-didnt-kill-zines.html?%5Fr=0&ref=hyperallergic.com) to the increasing digitization of our lives. Now in its third year, the [Long Beach Zine Fest](http://lbzinefest.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com) is a celebration of the medium and of independent publishing. This edition, housed at the Museum of Latin American Art, will feature over 100 artists and publishers as well as a series of discussions, workshops, and musical performances.

Most of the exhibitors hail from Southern California, but some come from as far away as [Hawaii](http://lbzinefest.com/cm-butzer/?ref=hyperallergic.com) or [Guadalajara](http://lbzinefest.com/la-merma/?ref=hyperallergic.com). The themes covered run from the personal to the political, with women, artists of color, and LGBTQ communities prominently featured. These include Riverside’s [Zines Rasquache](http://lbzinefest.com/zines-rasquache/?ref=hyperallergic.com), which explores the “Xicanista” experience; [*This Goth Bitch*](http://lbzinefest.com/this-goth-bitch-friends/?ref=hyperallergic.com), which offers a queer POC perspective on gloom and glam; and pioneering veterans [Third Woman Press](http://www.thirdwomanpress.com/?ref=hyperallergic.com), who have been publishing books by feminists of color since the late ’70s, but only recently branched out into zines. Alongside the marketplace, the free, all-ages event will also have [talks](http://lbzinefest.com/panels/?ref=hyperallergic.com) on queer and Latinx publishing, [workshops](http://lbzinefest.com/workshops/?ref=hyperallergic.com) on “first-language zines,” among other topics, [live music](http://lbzinefest.com/music/?ref=hyperallergic.com), and food from local vendors. In keeping with the fest’s independent spirit, biking is encouraged, and free bike valet will be offered.
